CV boot replacement

Post by dosbricks »

New member here :)

The outer CV boots on my 850 wagon (117k) are showing some age cracks in the grooves. I would like to replace the boots before they open up and start throwing grease.

If the grease has not been contaminated with dirt, do I have to wash out all the old grease with solvent (a messy job) or could I just wipe it off and repack it with new grease?

Also, the boots sold by fcpgroton are made by CRP. Are these good, or would I be better off getting the Volvo boots from the dealer? I don't want to have to do this job twice, so thanks in advance for any replies.

When I replaced my C.V. boots I just repacked them after wiping the old greese off. I actually had the boot bust on me...literally. It was such a mess and I'm so glad it's over with now. I bought my boots from www.thevolvosite.com Great place to buy parts and they are sold at a good price. I called the dealer and they seemed a little high...go figure. But all the parts at thevolvosite are very high quality if not OEM. I was very pleased. Good luck with your C.V. Boot replacment.

The entire axles are $70 at NAPA on sale right now, $60 at Pep Boys - takes very little time to replace.

Good luck- just did mine. I also just did the lower ball joints, TR ends, and sway bar end links.

People have been telling me this is a real messy job and I have been considering the rebuilt axles. I suppose they would be as good or better than my joints with 117k on them.

Thanks guys, for sharing your advice.

FYI - I went to Pep Boys about 3 weeks ago looking for the $60 axles, but they only had $99 rebuilt ones with a $50 core charge.

Replacing a boot is cheaper than the entire axle, but when axles are this cheap, it doesn't make sense to take the time to replace a boot.

Beware the rebuilt axles. This is a fairly young industry and rebuilt axles are pretty hit and miss. Maybe not a huge problem if you do your own work, but you'll still need an alignment every time you have to do them
