'02 S60 T5 - Afermarket Heated Seats?

Post by StarmanDXE »

Hi everyone!

So, I'm getting an '02 S60 T5 soon, but it doesn't have the factory-installed heated seats... :( (My 850 spoiled me! :D )

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone has been down the path of getting them installed aftermarket.

From what I understand, the buttons are already in the dash underneath the blanking plate. Therefore just button covers need to be bought for there. (I won't have the car until I go home from school for break next week, so I can't verify this myself...)

Then I would need the actual heating elements and the control units (one for each seat?). But, from what I have been told, the control units are married to the car?

So, anyone happen to know the process to get a Volvo dealership to install the necessary software once I have sourced/installed the parts?

Or maybe someone knows of an aftermarket seat heater set I could just wire up to the stock buttons?

I checked the database for accessory installation but it didn't have it. (BTW, what are "required tools" A0000162 and A0801178? They seem to be listed for a lot of installations.)

Thanks for any/all help! :)

The A0801178 special tool is the VCT2000 (or DiCE) and a VIDA subscription...this is for programming.

Note that T5s usually have 'sport seats'--the heating elements are different from the regular seats, make sure your parts people order appropriately.

After installing the switches, heating pads, and the heated seat control module, and connecting all wiring, the car needs to be taken to the dealer. There, the PSM (Power Seat Module) must have the software for the "seatheater application" loaded onto it (note that there are two PSMs--one for the driver's and one for the passenger's seat). There are three part numbers, depending on the temperature range, 8651381 for 36-43C, 8651384 for 32-38C, and 8651387 for 28-35C.

If you don't want to go to the expense and trouble of putting the Volvo ones in, you can always go after-market (how much during the year would you use the heated seats anyway)? Look around, but one simple google search produced this: http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/seatheatac.html

Ah, thanks for that bit of insight! BTW, any suggestions as to where I should source the parts from? (Maybe the dealer so they would be more willing to help me with the software? Ha ha!) And any idea of the costs? Hopefully somewhere in-line with the aftermarket options...?

Thank you kindly for the information! :)

Oh! And any idea about the module being "married to the car"?

Thanks, I've been looking around at the various 3rd-party options. But, honestly, I'd really rather keep it as stock as possible

And, yes! I will sorely miss my heated seats! Maybe not as much so if the seats were cloth, but they are most assuredly leather... Plus, I want to rid myself of that empty spot on the dash where the heated seat buttons go! :D (Got any ideas for superfluous items with switches I could install? )

(BTW, any chance you want to add that tidbit about the A0801178 to the sticky post about that site?)

The heated seat controller module is plugged into, but separate from, the PSM. Replacing the PSM will require a reload (i.e. downloading of software), but installing the heated seat controller (p/n 9442947 on your vehicle) does not require software downloading, that module isn't tied into the CAN network directly, but rather controlled by the PSM (hence the need to install the "seatheater appl" when you're finished).

Thanks so much for the help!

Sounds like I'll be trying to go used for the modules and (potentially) I can/will use aftermarket heating pads(?) We'll see...

Thanks again for the help and hopefully I can find a dealer who will install the software for me. :)

Definitely go used for the modules.

I have part numbers for the seat heaters. To all who search, these are part numbers for SPORT seats, not comfort seats and apply from 2001-2004 MY; these only apply to cars with chassis number 244012 and onwards (this is the last 6 digits of your VIN, check to make sure it's greater than or equal to 244012). All T5s had sport seats, some others had them as well as a factory option (here's where having your build sheet comes in handy--if you don't have one, go to your dealer with the VIN and they'll print it off for you).

Upper seat back heater: 30675158 (superseded from 8686609)
Lower heater: 30675156 (superseded from 8686605)

Note that these part numbers apply to *both* front seats.

The switches are also dependent on chassis number. Thru chassis -314999, the LH switch is 9168282 and the RH switch is 9442462. From chassis 315000- onwards, the LH switch is 8691506 and the RH switch is 8691507. The switches mount in the CCM below the defroster buttons (there's probably a cap there now).

Thanks! Well, dealer quoted me:

heated seat module: 9442947 $100.70 x2
lower seat back heater: 30675156 $64.94 x2
upper seat back heater: 30675158 $64.94 x2
left switch: 9168282 $9.98
right switch: 9442462 $9.98

For a grand total of $481.12

So, here's hoping I can get the modules salvaged for $100 total and buy the heating elements from heatedseatkits for $60 per pair. That's like ~$240 including those switches plus whatever the software install would cost.

Edit: Also, any chance you could check if other models (V70 and S80) share that same heated seat module p/n 9442947?

Just did a search through VADIS and all of the 70, 60 and 80 series Volvo's use that same part number from '01~04 but not from '05 and newer...Hope this helps.
