S80, 2000, Cat Convert

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80, 2000, Cat Convert

Post by Mias_Daddy »

I was wondering if anyone knew of a good after market for catalytic converter. Volvo dealership is running me 1,500.00 and the lowest I have found at a repair shop was 1,000.00 installed (800 for part-200 for labor)

I have looked online for a after market and I was told to be careful with them because they do not always work well as OEM.

I also have to replace coil packs # 5,6. Suggested replacing all plugs as well. Possibility of bad injector and mass flow air sensor...doubt that one because it was just replaced in the summer.

Volvo is trying to charge 3,300.00 for the above mentioned minus injector. I am hoping to get some insight from others on this site, as I am a newbie :D

2000 S80 105,xxx

Thanks in advance all,

Chad Holmes

Welcome to MVS.
Your at the miles for a timing belt change...have you done that yet?
The parts you speak of are not hard to change out. http://www.fcpgroton.com and http://www.eeuroparts.com sell these in OEM at quite a savings. What makes you think the CAT is bad?

Hello,

At the time of the breakdown, my vehicle wa only able to go 5 mph. I took it into a non dealer repair and they thought it was the throttle body...called Volvo and they said it was covered under an extended warranty...but in order to get it covered, I had to have Volvo do a scan also. They found out that it was changed out in 2003 after the scan and came back saying this on the print out;

Cat convert baffles clogging. # 5 & 6 ignition coils shorted. spark plugs worn. may need injector. may need mass air flow sensor.

Ala Carte checks:

Upper rear engine mount torn. Timing belt cracked. fuel filter original. RF sway bar link loose. ABS control unit failed.

I haven't had too much luck in finding a good after market for cat convert. They said it was plugged.

Yes, is the answer to the timing belt replacement. It was changed this last summer and it was an after market belt, so I don't know if they were just trying to say that or not...don't know. I have heard some bad things about that dealership.
Hope that helps.

Even after market belts won't start cracking this soon. You really do need a second opinion. I really don't trust what all they're telling you. Find a good independent mechanic who knows your car.

What makes you think that? On the initial scan from the non volvo dealer, said the following:

DTC'S 3503,3533 & 3556 are misfire codes
902A throttle unit signal too low- 130A Intake leakage

I went to your websites, but they do not carry the Cat Converter that I need. I have a 2000 S80 2.9l non turbo. Do you know of any other sites that may carry that converter?

Thanks for all your help on this.

I said what I said because of all of my years of being on these forums, I've only heard of a CAT clogging up a couple of times...and it causing coil packs to go...well, I've never heard of.
Besides, many use California spec (most stringent pollution controls) and OBD compliant Magnaflow converters without any issue for substantial savings. It doesn't cost much to have most any muffler shop to cut the old one out and install one of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CALIFORN ... ccessories
(that is, if you really need a new one).
