1989 240 cranks but will not turn over

Post by lukeblan »

i recently bought a 1989 240 with 200000 miles on it. I've driven it for less then a week and it has been towed twice already. The altanator and the battery have been replaced and it was running perfect, but today while i was driving the car turned off while i was excellerating. Now it cranks but will not start. im at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas??

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Is this the naturally aspirated engine or the turbo? If the former then there is an on-board diagnostic system fitted in the engine compartment which will show if any fault codes have been set.

To use this see: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... c&start=12

The method is the same for your car but some of the codes may be different. Read the codes and post back.

Mine has done this before - fuel pump fuse was faulty. Could also be poor contacts on the fuseboard.

If you are not sure of the age or history of the TWO fuel pumps in your car, then search this forum for my posts on fuel pumps. This may be a contributing factor in your problem. Let me know if you have any questions.

check behind the timing belt cover and see if it is turning while you crank
