Strange ticking noise.

As far as our mundane, earthly concerns go, I believe the ticking you hear may be the injectors. The 850 is notorious for noisy injectors causing their owners to worry about tapping valves - the sound is very similar. I hear the same thing whenever I open my hood and my engine is running. Mine is not intermittant however.

Not all engines are the same, so you may want to use a stethoscope to make sure that's where the noise is coming from.

I will look into the injectors. If it is the problem should I replace them?

No, ticking injectors is normal.

Yep, it's the injectors, boy are they loud.

Hi
i have a tapping noise coming from my 850 R on tick over when hot and cold the tap comes and goes and if you rev the car the noise stops at over 1000 rpm i have changed oil and added oil aditve changed cam belt and tensioner and idle pully also took power steering belt of and still have noise.
Might it be the crank pulley ???

Or what is it ??????????

If the noise just started one day, chances are it's not your injectors. Your engine might just need a good cleaning. The 850 turbo that I bought, lost all of it's compression, because of sticking lifters. It too had tapping sound coming from under the hood.

Hey 850 R I have a 98 S70GLT doing the same thing it seems. Do you notice it when you pull up hill more than on flat ground and when first accelerating. I have not been able to figure mine out yet. I will keep yall updated

I was having the same problem with my 99 s70 and I have started my first cylce of engine treatment from http://www.auto-rx.com/index.html and I can already tell a huge difference.
