Correct fuel pump relay for 95 850 non-turbo automatic

Post by sbsuth »

I've been experiencing intermittent stalling problems, and reading the massive thread on the subject: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... php?t=3484 trying to get it resolved.

One of the things I want to try is replacing the fuel pump relay. Mine still works, but I suspect it of failing intermittently. My problem is, the replacement part I bought doesn't work at all. I must have the wrong part, but I'm not sure what the right part is. The tale is a bit convoluted.

Here's what I know:

- The relay I'm replacing is labeled 103, and is in the fuse box on the driver's side, under the cover. The part has a yellow cover, and has 5 connectors because it contains 2 relays. The part number is 9434013. This is different to the red #103 relay that's often described as the correct part for a 1995 850. The red part has only 4 connectors. Apparently the red relay is for manual trans, and the yellow relay is for auto trans?

- You can't find a new 9434013 part for sale anywhere. I called 2 Volvo parts departments, and they both say that part has been superceded by 9441029. The 9441029 is offered by several online retailers, and is consistently listed as the fuel pump relay for 850 non-turbo automatics.

- I bought one from Autohaus AZ. Its a KAE part. The part appears identical externally, and has the same labels for the connectors. It seats properly as well. However, after engaging immediately after turning the key, it disengages after a second, and the car stalls. I got a replacement part, and the same thing happened, so it was not a faulty part. The replacement part contains 2 coil relays, but the original is all solid state.

Before I go and get another part directly from Volvo, I thought I'd post to see if anyone has any experience with this. Anyone else replace the fuel pump relay on a 95 non-turbo 850 with auto trans? If so, what part did you use?

The correct part# is 9434225. This is the new substitute with 4 prongs for the part# VADIS calls for 95 n/a.
I bought one from myswedishparts.com (dealer) for $38 and works like what suppose to.

I figured 9434225 was wrong since it had 4 prongs.

So, the part you replaced had 5 prongs, and the new part has only 4? Is your car a manual or an auto?

Why do you think its wrong? The 5th prong is just an extra ground connection.

Yes, My 95 n/a is auto.

All of mine, automatic or stick, turbo or N/A are interchangeable. Some of my cars have the red 9434225 relay and others have the green 9434138 relay but I can swap them back and forth between cars with no problem at all. I have never seen a yellow fuel pump relay with 5 pins. Post a picture of what you have.

Thanks guys. Sounds like 9434225 is probably the right part to try.

Yup, that's the same as my part:

When I called the local Volvo parts dept and gave them my model/year/etc, they first gave me 9434225. But when I told them my relay has 5 pins and gave them my part # (9434013) they said it had been superceded by 9441029.

If the extra pin is just a ground, and 9434225 works for others, then the 9441029 info must just be an error.

Here's the replacement part I bought (that doesn't work): http://www.eeuroparts.com/Main/PartDeta ... id=9441029.

The info on this site is consistent with what Volvo told me.

That is fascinating. I wonder what pin 87B goes to? I have a 94 and a couple of '96s. None of them have the 5th pin. I will study the Polish schematics tonight to try to figure it out.
