C70 1999 Oil Leak and Check Engine Light

First of all, "what screws?" would be my question. I have, in all of my time on these boards (close to 10 years now, probably in one form or another), NEVER heard of needing an engine rebuild or replacement for stripped screws. Even if screws on the engine were stripped, there are alternatives to get engines tight again if that's the problem...need to know more to understand what's really going on. Anyway, this dealer is trying to take you for all you're worth and buy the car out from under you at quite a profit to them. Run from them and never look back. You really need to find a decent independent shop that specializes in Volvo's and let them have a look. If you can get it up to Sweetwater, TN (between Chattanooga and Knoxville), I know a guy that works for $45 (maybe $50 now) an hour who absolutely loves Volvo's and would do you right. He would be honest and tell you exactly what you need.

Ok, I live in Georgia, Newnan, GA about 39 miles south of Atlanta! I do wish I could get the car there. I feel that you are right about the dealer. I drove the car to Macon, GA to the dealer and I am going to have it picked up and brought back to Fayetteville, GA. There is an independent shop that is willing to install the engine and back up their work.

They would be willing to install the engine if I brought the engine myself. The labor would be $1,800.00. Does that sound reasonable?

You are right about the screws. I believe the problem with the oil had to do with oil coming out from around the screws where they did not fit.

Thanks so much. I just thought that the "deal" they were offering didn't sound like a deal at all. They have lost me forever! I really did not like the S80 they showed me. The cost of the car was listed at 43,000.00 and they would give me a deal at 41,000.00! When I bought my C70 from them the cost of the car was 40,000.00. I bought it for 30,000.00. I know times are rough right now but I am not crazy and I know that the dealer was doing a "rip" job on me.

Actually, the shop that is offering to do it for $1800 is high too...you can get a decent used engine (with warranty) from http://www.erievovo.com (you'll have to call them) for under $750 shipped...and about $1000 for the installation. So for under $1800 you should be able to get all the work done (including a good replacement engine)- BUT...I'm still not convinced that you really need a new engine. It would be much better to fix the engine that is in your car now. Even the worst leak- a rear main seal would be under $1000 to fix (engine is dropped, the engine and transmission is unbolted from each other to replace a $15 gasket and then put back together and back into your car). Screws holding the engine together are stripped? There are ways to anchor the screws if they are....so like I said, you need a second opinion if the engine is really toast or not.

I just read great reviews on these guys- fair and know their stuff: http://www.atlantavolvoservice.com/ Also, just read that South Gwinnett Auto Service (2064 Main St E Snellville, GA 30078 (770) 736-8088‎) was very good and took care of a guy's volvo that was leaking oil like a sieve without charging him an arm and a leg. Over-all opinion on the boards is that Dyer & Dyer are a bunch of snobs who replace everything rather than fix them and charge outrageous prices, and still doesn't get things right, one guy even posted (this is over on Volvospeed forum) that this is the "worst dealer in the south." Volvo of South Atlanta isn't spoken highly of either (although not quite as bad as D&D).

I guess what I'm trying to tell you is to find someone rather than a dealer who knows these cars and who is reputable- not someone who's going to rip you off and at least get a second opinion on what's going on with your car before jumping into an engine replacement with someone who might still rip you off.

I do appreciate your help with this. I will contact those places tomorrow. I must say that the information you got about Dyer and Dyer is right and Volvo of South Atlanta is no longer selling Volvo cars. I did not like them at all when I took my car there to get them to change the oil. I did not deal with them. I took my car home(LOL)! I always thought that Volvo of South Atlanta was just a branch of D&D.

I'll post tomorrow and let you know what the other places told me. Once again, let me tell you how much I appreciate your help!

right on, i guess were are about 3 hours away. just curious what could be stripped so badly, im new to the whole dealership thing, just 6 months have not seen much just sounds wrong to me
