C70 1999 Oil Leak and Check Engine Light

I will have to go get the vin number. The car is at the dealership in Macon and I plan on picking it up on Monday. I have everything you have written and I will take note of your information.

I am not certain about the turbo but it is a turbo. I wanted to have the windshield wipers on the headlights so I had to order the winterized package which included the turbo 5 cylinder engine. I ordered this car. I did not get it off of the lot and I have a very special connection with it. It is black with black seats, automatic, and it was just what I wanted. I do not want to throw my car away. It has 72,000 miles on it. I don't do a lot of driving

I have to go out for a bit but I will return. I think I may go on and go with the guy who does the mobile work! Of course, I will call all of them to see who can get to my car fast and who will warranty their work.

Sounds good Carole...just wondering if it's a coupe or convertible? Btw, any insurance papers/cards you have will have the VIN# on them. Also, this mobile guy might not know about Volvo engine rebuilding (or maybe he does?) but at least he could put you in the right direction- we'll see! Keep us informed, okay?

I spoke with my sister's husband and he told me that he knows a person who specializes in Volvo repair. I will get his name and attempt to find out more about him. I did send you a pm with the vin number. The car is a coupe.

Yes, thanks for the VIN...I got it.
I sent you info back. Just in case someone else reads this forum and follows along, this car is a HPT (high pressure turbo) with the B5234T3 engine- same exact one that is in my '98 S70 T5. A very fast car when it is running right! Knowing this information will help in getting the correct parts. I hope this guy your B-I-L knows is decent and knows his stuff. Anyway, a non-dealer, Volvo specialist is who you want working on your car.

You may not be interested in this stuff but I am uploading 3 pdf files that you can read through on dismantling and assembling your particular engine and also reconditioning the engine (which includes the use of helicoil inserts). These files are from Volvo's own repair manual. Some of the stuff doesn't apply because if you need a rebuilt head, it will come already put together. I will mention though that most likely you will need 2 front cam seals (intake and exhaust) as well as a rear cam seal which I forgot to mention earlier. Anyway, the files will help you understand what your Volvo's possibly going to go through (unless the engine is good and all they have to do is put in helicoils for the new head bolts).

Hello David!

I am in the process of getting the phone number of the Volvo mechanic and as soon as I get it I plan on sending him the link to this thread. Hopefully he can get the history of the car and the problem from this info and he can tell me if he can do the repair. I will keep you informed. I will certainly let you know about the cost. My sister's husband says that he has seen his work and he spoke with the owners of the cars and they have high praise for him. I am hoping that my luck will change with this guy and he can fix my car. He is in Fayetteville, GA, about 20 miles from here.

Will it be okay for me to send him the pages you sent me? I am pretty sure he has the information but I don't want to take any chances anymore. I just want my car on the road again in a reasonable amount of time.

I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything.

Carole,
certainly, he can have them...this is a public forum and there's nothing to hide here.
Just remember that all of what is written is really a hypothesis...from what we've gathered. It could be that he gets into this and that the oil leak is not from where the two halves of the engine bolt together, but, for instance, from a rear main seal leak, or somewhere else. If it's the rear main seal and it's really bad, you could lose oil at the rate that you're describing to me as well. Anyway, I do think we're on the right track though, especially after you described that the head was rebuilt and bolts were stripped out, etc.
Keep us informed...I'm sure interested to find out what the final solution is.

The oil leak is between the Cam Cover and the Head. The seals were replaced. The mechanic who worked on it says he is sure it is between the top and the head.

He says that the only thing that was changed was the bolts that hold the cam cover down. The Cam Cover itself is fine. "They rethread the bolt holes for the cam cover in the head." This is exactly what he just now told me.

Is this good information?

It's very good news! This was exactly what I was saying...they'll probably use helicoils or something else like them to rethread the engine block then they can tighten down the head like it should have been done in the first place. This shouldn't be that expensive either. If I were you, I would be extra angry at that dealer now, having this confirmed. They were trying to scam you out of your car. Do you have any recourse for the place (was it the dealer?) who muffed this job?
