2003 V40 Dashboard lights - Please Help

Post by mike_one2many »

I am hoping someone can help me figure out how to take apart the dashboard in my 2003 v40.

Most, but not all, of the lights in the environmental control unit (temp, fan, seat-warmer) are burned out. Not sure if they can be replaced or not, though clearly the first step is to get that part of the dashboard out of the car.

It appears center portion of the dashboard is made up of 3 components, incased in the immovable part of the dash: the radio, the casing around the radio, and the darn thing I am trying to get at. I got the radio out and the screw that holds the casing from the bottom.

Does anyone know how that casing is secured from the top? Clips? Screws?

May be someone has a picture?

VADIS instruction attached.

The bulbs that illuminate the panel are replaceable but I'm not sure about those for the switches.

Mike -

What type of bulb is used on that panel? I have to get in to replace the ones in my '04 V40 as well. Would love to know how you fare.

Best,
Daniel

Daniel - haven't gotten the pannel out (on tap for this afternoon), but learned the following from the my local dealer:
- bulbs around the knobs (fan, temp, direction) are replacable and cost about $19 year
- bulbs in the buttons (seat warmer, defroster, etc.) are NOT replacable

Stay tuned.

It's a matter of "will" and not trusting the dealer.
They are all replaceable if you want to...trust me.

Reporting success! :P

Here are the steps and a few things I learned along the way.

Lessons learned:
- There are 3 light bulbs in the climate control unit, Volvo US (US ONLY!) part number 30618412, approx $18 each.
- There are *NO* light bulbs to illuminate the buttons (such as the seat warmer or AC). The reason the letters light up is because the light seeps through from the 3 existing bulbs.
- The little lights next to each button to show that it’s working are LED lights imbedded into the circuit board for the control unit. So, if you hit the AC button, the AC turns on, but the green light doesn’t come on, you cannot fix that.

If you need to embark on this little project yourself, here are the steps:
1. Take out the stereo
2. Take off the plastic cover around the knobs for the climate control (as Bill shows above - THANK YOU, BILL!)
3. The lower portion of the center console (around the stereo) is secured by 3 Phillips screws: two on either side of the climate control (lower) and one in the middle underneath the stereo
4. Remove the lower portion of the center console (you may also have to unplug the trip computer)
5. Remove the upper two Phillips screws holding in the climate control and push it back, twist and down to remove
6. Unplug the climate control unit and remove the white clear plastic hose used by the automatic temperature control unit (there is no clip holding it)
7. Remove four t-10 screws (torx – star shaped) holding the back cover of the unit and you will find a circuit board (no need to remove that)
8. The light bulbs are imbedded through the circuit board and can be removed by turning them counter-clockwise with a pair of needle-nose pliers
9. Replace light bulbs and reassemble the car following these steps in the reverse order

Good luck!

I have the same issue with my 02 S40. Would it be safe to assume the procedure/part# would be the same?
