2000 Volvo S40 Headlight Wipers

Post by cardz »

I haven't been on the post for awhile but I guess no news is good news. The car has been great but I have a little bit of a problem. The headlight wipers are stuck and the one blade broke off. I am getting the replacement blades but Im wondering if I can 1- change them myself and 2- get the unstuck myself.
If someone can let me know or lend a helping hand and give me some advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

The headlight wipers are stuck
Do you mean that the blades are stuck to the glass or the wiper motors are not working?

Replacing the blades is easy. Pivot the arm away from the headlamp and pull the blade away from the arm. The new blade clips in. Ensure that the shorter end of the blade is towards the grille. There is a diagram on page 94 of the Owner's Manual.

Thank you so much. Everyone is so helpful on this site. But to also answer your other question, the headlight wipers get stuck in the upright position only periodically. When I wash the windshield and then I get out of the car i notice that the wipers are stuck in the upright position. Then other times they will be down where they are supposed to be. Would you recommend replacing the motors (if so is that an easy task) or just leave it until the wiper motor completely dies out? If you could let me know I would really appreciate it.

If it is only intermittent I would be tempted to leave them as replacing the motors is no small job.

Without being too detailed the bumper has to be slackened off and the headlamps removed.

If you do decide to replace them post back and I can give you more detailed instructions.

You can just disconnect them if you don't want them anymore. Check on http://www.s40concepts.net/newforum/ for the "plugs" that go in the hole that the wiper arms leave when you pull these. I believe they're available for your car.

Thanks for the advice. I picked up a 12 dollar part and both wipers for 20 dollars and just fixed them. I guess for the wipers getting stuck periodically, I'll take your advice and just leave them. Thanks for all your help. I love this site.

My 2004 is doing the same thing. What was the part and where did you find $20 motors?

Hi, does anyone know what could cause windshield fluid not to come out of the headlight wipers? I've already tried to pull the hose out of the wipers and force liquid thru them and very little comes out. One more than the other. I understand that the hose may very well be kincked under the headlights, but could be something else? I have a 2001 S40.
