EGR low air flow

Post by chriscallon »

What does this mean? My car hasn't been warming all the way up since this started. Will it hurt the car to put off the repair for a while? can i get stranded because of this?

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is a method of reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and is used in most petrol and diesel engines. At a basic level it recirculates a percentage of the exhaust gas into the cylinders.

For a better than basic level see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhaust_gas_recirculation

Obviously if the flow is too low it will affect the running of the car, increase NOx emissions and would stop the car passing the exhaust emissions test.

Unless it became really serious I don't think you will be stranded.

It is possible that the EGR converter is not working correctly. Are you aware of the On-Board Diagnostic unit in the engine compartment? You can test the EGR converter by using this.

OK, i wasn't able to check the EGR converter (do i need A special tool for this?), but now the temperature gauge
reads at the maximum possible level. It happened while i was driving, so i came home. It doesn't appear as though car was overheating, but I only went around the block and it's 47 degrees in portland today.

I'm going to contact my mechanic 9who is closed today) but any more input would be helpful.

Thanks,
Chris

No special tool is needed. The On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) is in the engine compartment.

To use it see: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... c&start=12

The method of use does apply to your car although headed for the 740 but the codes are different.

The 960 codes are:
