In others words get them from the dealer ahead of time(the seals ), I am not so good on a unicycle.

You must have DDS or the Wohn axels because the axels I have are FEQ and have the staked nut, pic on the right which is smaller.

Image

Click on the picture once it is opened and you will see some text.(thats three clicks altogether)

I tried if the bigger nut(Wohn) would fit on the FEQ axel it was a no! no! I was not about to try re-tap the threads as the nuts and axels are new. I only know of the difference because I was sent one of each type. They were ordered together so someone did not have their thinking cap on.
Fcp have corrected the error to their credit .

Thanks

I bought those same 2 axles from FCP Groton for my 93 850. I'm preparing to put them on. The right axle is by WONH and it has a nice large nut, but the left one is by FEQ and it has that little staked nut. Will FCP Groton provide a better nut? I'm not near a dealer and the car is on jack stands.

I'm sure Groton will make it right...call them first thing in the morning. It's too bad this happened, not to one person but to two.

It sounds like the larger nut will not fit that axle with the smaller nut on it from what tailor says. I got the DDS axles for both sides which have the large nuts.

Hi folks!

I am replacing my front axles in the next few weeks, and I am wondering what the recommendation is for the parts. I have read about Raxles.com, but then I see that IPD has the same for a little less, etc. I drive fast, but not all that hard, if that makes sense. Is Raxles' product for high performance only? I am beginning to lean towrds the IPD at $175 per side. I think Raxles are significantly more, but I have to call and verify.

Thanks for the tip on the axle seals as mentioned by Turbotim2. Is there anything else that should be done in this area while the car is up on stands?

Thanks so much!

I'd go with IPD...I'm sure they carry quality products. Personally, I went with Raxles but that was before I knew about IPD also carrying these. I think a good axle is a good axle...performance or not.

That said, what else to look at? Just make sure you get a transmission to axle seal in case yours leaks when you pull the axle out. Other than that, just inspect everything up under and near the axle (suspension, brakes, etc.) when you do the exchange. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Btw, no one to my recollection has done a photo write-up on the axle replacement. Especially getting the axle out of the spline and dealing with the circlip can sometimes be a sticking point to this replacement. If you would document and take pictures of your experience it would be most appreciated by myself and all of those that frequent this forum.

I plan to replace the driver's side (left) axle on my mom's 1997 850 soon. The car needs CV joint, and with 150k miles I thought I would just replace the whole axle.
I could not find the .pdf that BillofDurham mentioned.
Also, MadeInJapan mentioned that "getting the axle out of the spline and dealing with the circlip can sometimes be a sticking point to this replacement."
Can someone give me a few more details before I proceed? Is this 'circlip' the same thing as a snapring? I have snap ring pliers. Is it so recessed that getting to it is tricky?

Finally, are these the aforementioned transmission seals?

Any tips for replacing this seal? I have replaced similar engine seals before (on a 240); I'm just wondering if there's anything unexpected that I should know about.

Thanks, guys. I just want to get in there and get it done. I don't need to dash this project with any spice. :)

Last Summer I ordered both of the cheap axles from FCP and had the same issue with different sized nuts and 2 different manufacturers. After I had done the job I thought that I had read someone mention horror stories of a poor quality CV axles form FCP actually snapping off at the transmission

I did not personally have an issue with this but it sure worried me.

The circlip is not like a snap ring. It is simply a single loop almost like a key ring with a small gap. it fits into a groove on the transmission side of the drivers side axle. It compresses flush with the axle as you push it in and springs open a little once in. It can sometimes be a huge pain work it out.

Hmm. So, when it engages does it expand? And, then to remove you have to compress it?
What tool(s) did you use to remove the circlip?
Thanks for your reply. If anyone had a photo I would understand.
