used this method to flush my 99 xc last night and it was great.
btw- if anyone was wondering where to get the hose(dave edit the OP), its from home depot. costs about $7. i used about 15qts for a complete flush. definatly a two person job, can be done by yourself but very risky and REALLY messy if you f'up.

the neverending thread....
took 12 quarts to get the fluid to come out pink for me today. as others have reported, my '00 car had the green clip which came out intact. if i had to do it again(by myself), i would invest in a 10 foot 1/2" ID hose instead of 6 footer. that would allow me to bring the hose and the receptacle container right next to the left front door so i could keep tabs on how much fluid has exited the system. lowes actually had a 10 foot hose for around $4.

Well guys...this system has proven itself again today.
I flushed the S70...wow, does it shift butter (I mean better!). I'm right at 170K miles and last flush was at 135K miles. I have to do the V70 in the next month or two...it's approaching 80K miles and I last did it at 50K miles- I'm trying to stay on a 30K mile flush with it.

Excellent site gentlemen. I'm also honored to contribute to such a venerable thread.
I read most of the posts relating to flushing the transmission. It sounds relatively straight forward. Some advice here and there recommended not flushing a high mileage tranny with very few actual flushes in its history.
Would a flush and new fluid damage the old tranny? My '94 850 Turbo has 232,000 and could have been treated better in its earlier life. I was gearing up to do my '04 V70R and thought I'd kill two birds with one stone. Not a good idea?

On the 200K+ miles, 850 which hasn't been flushed much in it's life I would do the drain and fill...on the other, a full flush. Make sure you use the JWS-3309 spec fluid on the newer 5 speed auto. Good luck and post back your experience.

A note of caution: A week or so after a transmission flush- the line I took off from the radiator to flush the fluid came loose while driving home on the interstate and I lost a total of 3 1/2 quarts of ATF before I got home. I thought it was the PNP switch so I didn't stop- should have. But all is back to normal after I filled it up again. So, how did the transmission line come loose? I didn't have a plastic zip tie so I used a metal clamp- apparently putting on a clamp like this too tight, deformed the oetiker clamp under it to the point that it became round and slipped off. Don't use a metal clamp there- only zip tie...lesson learned. I was very lucky that I didn't lose more and burn up my transmission- probably having synthetic ATF in the transmission helped as well.

Yeah, thanks...it was a bad odor- and you really can't clean that very well... you really just have to let it sort of drip off and then wipe up what is left as a film that's slick. When I lost fluid, my up arrow on the dash started flashing as well as the check engine light and shifting was erratic. Like I said, I'm glad the drive home wasn't very far. I drove the car today and all is restored- shifting like butter again...needless to say, I replace the clamp with a zip tie after straitening out the deformed oetiker clamp...

the temperature was in the 60s today and i had been stockpiling the ATF along with a new volvo hose clamp+zip tie for the upper tranny hose so it became a perfect day to do a flush on the T5.
the old fluid was still on the pink side of the color scale but it was definitely darker than new fluid. 10 quarts went in before i saw pink again but i flushed an additional 2 quarts just for good measure.
the shift between 2nd and 3rd gear was a bit harsh prior to the flush but now all the gears shift smoothly. i may even splurge and use mobil1 atf the next time around.
the old fluid was still on the pink side of the color scale but it was definitely darker than new fluid. 10 quarts went in before i saw pink again but i flushed an additional 2 quarts just for good measure.
