You can cut off the plastc chunk with an exacto knife but you'll be left with a large hole in the throttle plate. The plastic is molded on to both sides of the plate through the hole. The plate is brass or copper so I suppose you could braze or weld The hole. I'm not up on my metalurgy skills. In my area 960s are all over the JYs. The TB faces straight up. With a flat head screw driver I can have just the plate alone out in less than 5 minutes. It's much easier to get to than the 850.

Justin,
My 850 is an automatic but if you're pulling down 550 miles on the highway out of one tank of low octane...I'm making this change! City mileage might not be a good comparison because of the transmission difference but once we are both in top gear on the highway all bets are off. The best I've done is 27 on Premium...about 460 miles to a tank.
It's a cheap fix and I have the PCV to do anyway. Jamie at Waltrip Volvo plays hockey with me so I get cheap parts! If I can't find it at the JY I'm buying one!
Thanks for the info

Hi Guys, like Craig i too have and automatic tranny, i was curious to see if it differs that much from the 5 speeds...it still seems like an interesting mod, There is a guy parting out his 960 maybe he might be selling the TB..
CRAIG...that's pretty good milage actually..about 690km to a tank..i don't think i've ever gotten that much. I think the next step for me is the o2 sensor..last thing left for stage 0.

TJTS1...so as i though, it's just the plate you're changing right? not the whole TB?
thanks

I don't want to get everyone excited about this modifications. I think it improves throttle response, not fuel economy. Our car has a lot of other changes like smooth underside paneling, large forward facing air intake and low rolling resistance tires in order to improve FE. Most of these paid for themselves last summer when gas cost $4.50/gallon.

Yes. They should all be the same as far as I know.

Hey thanks for replying...if the fuel consumption AT LEAST stays the same then good...if it goes higher then forget it. A better Throttle response would be good too...i know on my, fron a standstill, it take a little bit more to get her going. At times i feel a slight hesitation around 2000 RPM at WOT...
Any other info would be great. Thanks a bunch.

Anytime you improve low-end response you generally improve fuel economy. Getting these behemoths rolling is a chore sometimes. If I can be a little further out of the pedal while getting up to speed it should pay for itself...especially since the JY will almost give me the TB plate for next to nothing

Hey Craig..makes total sense what you're saying...the only thing is that the gas is computer controlled too, right? Who know..but it's true that if it gets to speed quicker, for sure, it will be easier on the engine too.
One question...who or what is JY?????
thanks

Junk Yard. Yeah the air / fuel miz will adjust but if the overall effect is lowering manifold vacuum at low end rpm.s I would think it will still yield an mpg gain. Heck even if I stay right where I'm at but my car is quicker and more responsive...good trade

Hey Craig...ya it is a good trade-off and i do see your point. The junk yard...didn't see that one..hahaha can the TB plate be changed with the TB on the car? i know if would be best to do it with it off though....i guess you don't want and screws going into the engine right?
i'll have to give it a try...thanks
