S80 Rear Shocks/Strut replacement

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 Rear Shocks/Strut replacement

Post by 537playing »

2001 S80 2.9L non-turbo

I'm trying to replace my rear struts. The lower support bolts are very hard to remove. On one side I finally got the bolt loose but it only speads the steel flanges apart as I continue to unscrew it. If I continue one of these flanges will break off. So I stopped.
I've been using PB Blaster for the last four days to try to loosen it up. No luck.
On the other side the bolt still doesn't budge.
My local shop states that the bolt should be torched off.

Any suggestions on methods or tools to get this job done?

According to my VADIS, you don't need to do all that if you're just changing the shock absorbers. You jack up the car and install a spring retainer (tool 9997079), then lower the car, remove the nut from the top of the shock and the bolt from the bottom and withdraw the shock. Reverse to install the new shock.

These cars don't have a "strut" at the back, so I'm wondering if the OP is referring to a different car.

My issue is with the lower bolt. I'm not looking to replace the spring.
The lower bolt is rusted and unable to remove.
My question is how to remove this bolt, not how to remove the shock...

Thanks

But you are replacing the shock...right?
In regards to the bolt, I think you're in for an impact wrench- trying to imagine how you'd break something down there if you keep going. You might try heat-...like a torch...get it very very hot and then try untorquing it.

i'm glad i stubled upon this. i need to replace the rear shocks in my '01 s80. from just looking at the set up on the car it seems pretty straight forward.
the "special tool" 999 7079 i'm guessing is just to retain the spring so it won't go flying when you remove the shock? i'd assume there is another way to accomplish this with out having to get a volvo made tool.

It seems that way- I would say just about anything you could rig up there would work.
