Whining noise from 97 v70 xc - Fixed

Post by Matt Kidd »

Hi
I've got this noise like its coming from the intercooler area.
The Volvo guys have replaced the intercooler but its not made any difference. The noise only happens when cold and will go away when the engine is upto normal temp. Its like a hrmmmm noise when ever the engine is revved.

Volvo said that because Ive go a reconditioned turbo unit on that it might be slightly more powerful than the original one causing the intercooler to make this noise. (?)

I've had the idler pully replaced twice by two different Volvo dealers and
had the water pump reconditioned.

I've also have a new temp sensor and stem seals replaced. (Cause it was blowing smoke)

Also the noise is starting to occur when driving on the freway around 50-55mph (90-100kmph)

Thanks & Regards

Matt

Thanks for the ghostly moan stories thats made me feel heaps better (Not).
After reading about the air pump. Can I disconnect it to see if it is making the noise. 27/12/04 Started car pulled main fuse for starter motor / air pump. No change in whining noise.

01/01/04 - Have taken the car back to Volvo dealer this week. They have will have a mechanic drive the wagon home and back to work in the morning to see if they can hear the noise first hand.

The mechanic reported the next day "I waited in the driveway with the engine started from cold, no noise ? Drove off and thought I would wake the whole neighbourhood !!"
Well the dealer called back to tell me this and was quite happy that they had heard the noise.

The wagon has been with them now for 1 & 1/2 weeks (I've got their 04 v40 sports - so its no too bad. They reckon they have narrowed the noise down to a pipe that connects to the intercooler.

I will update when I get the wagon back. Soon I hope

04/02/05 Got the wagon back after all this time. Looks as though they have fixed the noise !!!!!

After they replaced the intercooler the problem was still there. They have now replaced a pipe from the bottom of the intercooler to the oil return pipe ? I'm not sure if that is the correct wording but the dealer was pretty confusing with his explanation.
They did not charge me for this part so I can't tell you a part no.

Hope this helps

15/02/05 - Still fixed

Matt

Hi, My xc70 '98 has been doing this "a.m. moan" as well and was getting worse. I finally took it into volvo for a massive check out and, among loads of other bad news, they said it was coming from a leak in the rack-and-pinion which is causing the power steering to leak and moan. They offered to fix it for me at upwards of $1200. Hope this isn't your case, but it sounds like you've already put a lot of other "fixes" into the sound -- you might have them check out the r/p. They also said the "jetpowerdown" sound was coming from the same leak. They refilled the power steering and it isn't moaning as much.

Thanks Matt,

Does anyone have a better idea of the pipe in question.

This a.m. moan thing is really rediculous ... I can't believe that it's so difficult to diagnose... there seems to be no resolution on what's actually going on here!

A few weeks ago, my a.m. noise was getting REALLY bad... progressively worse. Then my clutch/release_bearing died... I took it to the shop... they changed the clutch/release bearing/rear seal, etc. During the clutch repair, my starter mysteriously died... thankfully the repairman replaced it for free!

Since then I've only heard the am noise a 2 times (rather than every time I started the car)... and when it does make the sound, its onlyl lasts a few minutes rather than the 10-15 minutes previous to the repair.

Hope this helps(?)
