putting a 960 TB on a N/A 850...
Re: putting a 960 TB on a N/A 850...
Oh yes, it does have the plastic piece. Have you made the change in your car? My car is being repaired right now and the head is off, due to a broken exhaust valve. At 200 k miles, it´r is amazing to see the cilynder walls perfect with polishing markings. I am a littele affraid of making the change and end up overloading the transmission or something else in a car this old, although well maintained.

Ya, I did the throttle plate swap over a year and a half ago on our 5 speed manual car. Go for it. You won't regret it. I thought you might have a 10 valve or 2.0 engine which didn't have the plastic chunk in Europe. I don't know which engines were offered in Brazil.

Made the swap last week. Wouldn't want to do it with the TB still on the 850. Very tight quarters and I needed to re-use the mounting screws from the 850. Gave it a good cleaning while it was off too. Haven't noticed an increase in mpg yet. Several factors contributing to that though. Winter fuel formula up here in MA generally causes a slight decrease anyway. And the noticable increase in low end ZIP makes me want to drive it a bit harder. It will never burn off the front tires but there seems to be a little bit more power at the low end. So when I return to driving it normally I'll be able to get a more accurate reading on mpg.

I'm happy to see this modification is working out for people. If you go through with this modification, please make sure to use locktite on the screws. You don't want these things backing out. Also a good time to clean out the whole TB and replace any cracked hoses and elbows.
Somebody asked if you can simply cut off the plastic chunk from the throttle plate. Heres the problem...

You'll be left with a long slot cutout in the TB plate. I don't know how to fill it in but if anybody else does please post the solution here. You'll save everyone a trip to the junkyard.
good luck

If that's brass, you could braize it. You have to fill the hole or your idle cicuit will be completely screwed. I would suggest JB Weld, but God forbid a piece breaks off and gets sucked into the top end.

European cars don't have this problem. I've only seen it on US market cars with a 2.5 liter 20 valve NA engine.JW850 wrote:I have a 1993 850 n/a and the throttle plate is already de wedged.

Would the airbox mod and the 960 throttle plate also apply to my 98 S70 and 00 V70? Both are N/A - I've never looked inside the throttle body of either.
Thanks.
Thanks.
