S80 Belt Pulley Bolt

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 Belt Pulley Bolt

Post by 537playing »

2001 S80 2.9L non turbo

Started today to attempt replacing my Timing Belt. It came to a halt as I stripped the 13mm pulley bolt. Any suggestions on method or tools to use to remove it. The other three were very hard to remove as well.

I did something similar on an 850 (torx bolt they use) on a tensioner pulley. After all kinds of attempt, I went and bought a cut-off tool at Harbor Freight and cut the piece off...I suspect you might be in for the same thing. Once the head is cut off, you can use some vice grips to get the rest of the bolt out. Hopefully the new part came with the replacement bolt.

Has anyone used a bolt extractor?

Are they good?

Bolt extractors ("EZ-outs") work good under the right conditions. You need decent access to use a drill, and you have to be very careful to drill down the center of the bolt. If you're off-center or at an angle, you stand a chance of damaging the threads. There's also a chance of breaking the extractor inside the bolt. If you're going to use one, make sure you get a good quality tool, it's worth the extra money.
Another option you might check into is a mobile mechanic. If you have a good one in your area, they'll have the tools to get it out for you. (At a price, of course...)

I used one on my oil drain plug. It worked well. I bought it at Sears.

The problem is getting it on straight and there's not much room in there- I would cut it off personally and save yourself the aggravation.
