XC90 cup lid

Post by jimichrome »

Hello, A piece of wrapped peppermint candy fell underneath / behind the "pop-open" lid that covers the coffee cup holders. The piece of candy interferes with the lid closing and opening operation. It's been impossible for me to fish out the piece of candy due to tight qtrs. You'd think it would be easy to remove the cup holder, but I'm stumped! I went at it with determination, prying, pulling,,,looking for assembly screws. I stopped short of inflicting damage to something. Can anyone give me a clue as to how I can uncover the errant candy piece below the XC90 cup holders? Thank you, jimi

I think you will find screws under the rubber pen holders to remove the console.

since this post has been resurrected I will ask, the pen holder behind the cup holder interferes with the lid closing, I just leave it open all the time. Has anyone else had this problem or a solution?
Thanks

Hello Stone,
When I was looking for my XC90 a found that 90% of them had trouble with the door. They either would not stay closed, or they would not open because of the pen holder. One dealer told me that only an adjustment is required. Mind you he is a salesman but I'm sure he had been asked about that several times before. The one I have was the only one I saw that worked almost perfectly. The lid stays closed but it just brushes agaisnt the rubber pen holder. I must add that it isn't the reason why I puchased the 90 I have. :) I havn't looked into how the ajustment is made but I read a thread about replacing radio bulbs and the first step was to remove the screws under the front pen holder. That would be a nice way to hide the screws I'm thinking.

Minor Success!

So I pulled off everything around the cup holders and didn't find anything that looked like would be adjustable, just screws to hold in place.

I realized that my problem was a 2-part, the first was even with no pen holder in place the lid would not open on it's own. I little wd-40 in the gear area and it opens on it's own, slowly but it opens. The second part is the pen holder in the way. I uesd to play lacrosse and to get an edge we would boil or bake the sticks to heat up the plastic and pinth them in a little. So I pulled of the pen holder boiled it for about 10 minutes, pulled it out, pinched it for about 20 seconds and the held it pinched in a pot of icewater for about a minute. So far it is working. I will see if it holds it's new form overnight, but I am excited so far.

When it is a nicer day I am going to pull it apart and check again for an adjustment, but the salesman may have been blowing smoke...

And in regards to the original post, to get to the candy wrapper:

Pull off the pen holder behind the cup holder, under that will be 2 torx 25 screws, remove

next, open the cupholder and pop off the panel that surrounds the shifter, it jsut snaps in and out of place, lift up a little harder than you feel comfortable and it will pop off, under that right by where the cup holder lid meets the next peice there are 2 more torx25 screws, igonre those and go for the tiny torx, I think they are T-10. that will allow you to remove the coupholders, it is a self contained unit, so you can probably turn it upside down and use tiny pliers to gt it out.

Good luck

I have the same problem as my lid wont close because the pen holder is in the way. I was thinking of shaving it down or sanding it down so the lid clears. But stone36, and wanted to ask about your boiling trick. What do you mean by pinching it? Can you explain?

Thanks!

I just took the whole pen holder out of the car and put it in a pot of boiling water, in theory, when you pull it out the plastic/rubber should be more pliable. So when I pulled it out, I turned it upside down and used a couple pairs of pliers to pinch the pen holder together to make it narrower (like closing a taco). Then I dropped it in ice water to speed the cooling process.

it worked for a few weeks and then it started getting in the way again... so I'd be interested to hear about your shaving/sanding option. Let me know if that doesn't make sense or if you have other questions.
