240 1992 - Wiring to rear hatch under hinges have broken

Post by RCC125 »

I need help from you experts. The wires going to the rear break lights are broken. I can see these because they run through the rear hatch hinges on top of the car. My problem is:
1. How do I get to the wires to replace/repair them?
2. To do above do I need to remove the hinges and if so how?
3. It also appears that the headliner may need to be removed to a degree, How's this done?
I sincerely appreciate any help from you, Regards, Bob

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

See: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... ing#p82286

Paul240480 describes how to repair this common fault.

The headlining has a turned-back stiff border about half an inch wide, normally hidden in a slim metal channel.
Grip a section of lining right on the rear edge and stretch it backwards. This will reveal the border which can then be unhooked from the channel.

Make sure you leave plenty of slack so you can do the job again in 2026.

Bill,
Got it covered for future repairs. The only problem is I'll be 75 years old in 2026 so I'll let my son the Doctor know what to do next time around. You take care, this is a very fine web site.
