95 850 - dead Tachometer, wonky speedometer

Post by kiddynamite »

95 850, N/A, 201K
Tachometer stopped working, just sits there at zero. Car seems to be running fine otherwise, except maybe the speedometer is reading a little bit high. I say maybe because I haven't tested it (I was thinking of just having a friend drive ahead of me at a steady speed and see if I matched) and I'd be entirely willing to believe that I'm just gaslighting myself on that one.

Anyways, anyone seen this before? Is a new instrument cluster in my future, or maybe just a sensor?

thanks

kd

You don't need to replace instrument cluster, just odometer gear. It's common problem on 850's.Here is explanation how to do it yourself: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/2005/0 ... ix-how-to/

The odometer turns fine right now; it's really just the tachometer (RPM gauge) that has failed.

Sorry, .
Check rpm sensor for loose connection.

There are self test diagnostics you can do on the cluster through port A-7.

Download the service manual pinned at the top of the page - https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=18706 - and then see the file named instrument panel.pdf for the procedure. If the instrument cluster passes the test look to a wiring problem or the vehicle speed sensor that Misha referenced. Normally when the VSS fails it throws a bunch of engine and transmission codes.
