1993 Volvo 850 - 314 3-1-4 ABS error

Post by hcampan »

Hi everyone,

I have a 1993 850 Volvo manual gear, 2L engine, that reads 314 3-1-4 (I'm repeating the number so people searching the forum can be helped with both formats).

It means, from what I've understood a rear right abs sensor short circuit or failure.

I also saw on this wonderful forum that I would may be have a faulty ABS module. But from the pictures I couldn't find my ABS module. It doesn't look like it is the same on a 1993 then on a 1996. Even the break master cylinder is different.

The ABS dashboard light is on permanent. It is the only error on the whole car. So it may be means it is a real error ?

I cleaned the sensor. It was full of dirt. I cleaned the contacts, there was no corrosion.

How can I test the continuity of the cabling ? how can I test the sensor ?

Thank you

Hubert

You can test the sensor with an Ohmmeter. It should have a resistance between 1040 Ohms and 1160 Ohms.

You can try to see if a wire is shorted to ground by measuring between each the wires at the connector to ground and you can also test if the wires are shorted together somewhere by measuring the resistance between the two wires. The resistance in both cases should be very high to infinite.

To test for an open connection I think I would plug the sensor back in and measure the resistance between the Green/White wire and the Green/Black wire at the connector on the ABS Module (Pin 45 and Pin 27). It should have a resistance very close to the resistance measured on the sensor.

The ABS module for your '93 should be located next to the master cylinder. It has a silver metallic case and electrical connections going to it.

Hi,

Good luck with fixing your car. If you need help fixing the module at all, let me know as I have done a few now within Australia.

Cheers, Jason

Dear all,

I finally have this ugly orange ABS light turned off !
Before buying anything I checked the right rear cables and harness for continuity.

Then I found on ebay my "precious". It was hard to get as they don't come often.
So I bought a second hand right rear abs sensor from a scrapper in US (I'm in France).

It took me 15 minutes once the postman came in to install it.
It started the car, but surprise ! The light was still on. Argh !

It pulled the codes and they were still saying "continuity" problem. Glups.
But I thought may be the computer didn't have time to check the ABS in working situation, so I took the car for ride.

And tadaaaa ! The light went away ! At last I'm going to have an error free dashboard.

Thanks again for all your advice on this matter.

Cheers !

Hubert

Any time the ABS system is repaired the light will stay on until the car is driven forward and exceeds, I think (fuzzy memory at the moment), 20 MPH.

Congratulations on a successful repair. :D
