S80 Filter Cleaning.

Post by mugabenp »

I have just cleaned my air filter with ( Gas or Petrol). It was really dirty. I could see that from the debris. I got it dried and reinstalled it and my S80 won't start. I am getting an message on the dash "Engine performance reduced". Any way round this or have I damaged some sensor.

I hope you are talking about a K&N type filter and not a stock paper filter - you don't clean those, just replace them.

I have the attached type of filter. I think it might be K & N. How does K&N filter look like.
What could be the reason for the vehicle not starting?

The K&N should look reddish-purple and you should have a sticker on or around the airbox telling you it has a K&N in it. Here's a link:

I suspect you do not have a K&N. I would go to the nearest auto parts store and buy a standard paper replacement filter, install it and see if the car will start then.

If it doesn't start after the new filter, is it possible the fumes may have harmed the Mass Airflow Sensor?

I would say that the gas fumes definitely could have done something to the MAF sensor- it would be worth cleaning it...remember that gasoline is slimy and leaves a residue.. OEM, 3rd party or K&N- I've never heard of cleaning any air filter with gasoline. The K&N comes with a special kit that dissolves the grime and then you wash it with water before re-oiling it.

You are right. I think volvo is quite sensitive. I have cleaned filters this way before. For other models . such as Honda & Toyota, this is no problem. Let me see what happens when I clean the MAF sensor.
