Dumb Question

I have a 1999 C70 LPT and I have a question. What is the black plastic box to the right of the oil drain plug with 2 hoses going into it? It is attached to the block and is easily accessible from under the car. Mine appears to be leaking a bit of oil. I would just like to know what to call it, and its function so I can replace it, if indeed the leak is coming from there. Any help would be great!

Sounds like the PCV(breather) or oil seperator,as it is sometimes called. There is an enormous amount of information to be gleaned from the database. If you post a picture, confirmation will be forthcoming.
PCV ; positive crankcase ventilation, it is part of the system to alleviate pressure in the crankcase, too much pressure and the rear main seal can be blown.

If its on the rear of the oil pan it is the oil cooler. The two hoses shoudl go up and connect with a silver set of pipes that lead back and forth behind the motor.

Make sure you are not getting a leak from the turbo drain pipe above. If you do have a leak at the oil cooler it should be serviced right away.

The turbo leak is more bothersome than dangerous but you should have it fixed regardless.

It is on the back of the motor, right next to the engine oil drain plug. I have already replaced the entire PCV system, as well as the oil drain seal kit. The car is 100% oil tight, with the exception of the this plastic box, which has a very slight amount of residue on it. No drips, just residue. I have see some stupid stuff on this car, but a plastic oil cooler??? Is there a gasket between it and the block that could need replacing?

Not really a gasket- two oil tubes (rubber) that attach them selves to the side of the block...they do get clogged up and need reaming out...if they block up then it's the same as the entire PCV system being clogged.

I inspected the 'box' today. It says Volvo on it and has a manufacturer name of 'BEHR'. It has two hoses on it, one is going to a large diamete steel tube on the back of the block that goes to the turbo and a rubber coolant cose, so it obviously has coolant in it. The other hose goes to what looks like right into the block. I do not think this is the oil cooler. The car is a late 99, but has had parts consistent with a 2000, so lets call it a 2000. Any ideas now?

So it IS the oil cooler. Sweet, another fantastic, reliable design, running coolant and oil inside such a high quality part :roll: How much will this great metal and plastic part set me back?

Thanks for the links, they were very helpful. I just have a tiny bit of residue on the bottom of the cooler, hopfully it is just the seal. I say 'hopefully' because I would rather set the car on fire and push it in the river before spending another $275 on it. I just put $2300 in parts alone into it, and it's never enough for the damn thing. This car hates me.
