2001 S40 Driver Side Door Speaker Issue

Post by drvolvo »

I removed my driver side door speaker to see why I was getting intermittent sound coming from it. It would come and go, especially over bumps. The speaker works when I press the center of the speaker in, or even if I push on the outer rim enough to depress the paper diaphragm (i think that is what you call it). I am not knowledgeable about speakers. Any ideas as to what is loose in my speaker and any suggestions for repairs? I'd rather repair than replace if possible.
I have attached a picture of the speaker.

Also, as an aside, you don't have to remove the door panel to get at the speaker. The plastic speaker cover just pops off to allow you access to the speaker. It is held on by 5 screws and you can disconnect the speaker from the back easily.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Can you post a pic of the back of the speaker?

Yeah there doesn't seem to be anything ripped, torn or missing from what I can see. All I know is the speaker doesn't play unless you press the center in, or in some way depress the paper diaphragm.

We can't really see anything. Can you take the speaker out of that housing so you can inspect the coil and the wires?

I wasn't sure if I could separate the speaker apart without breaking it. I'll see if anything comes apart to see inside.

The dented in part is just a dust cover...you might be able to use some steam on it and get it to separate from the cone so you can see the fine wires under it...you'll need to carefully then resolder that wire that has a short (you have to push on it for it to make contact)....then once your speaker is working again, use elmers glue to paste the dust cover back on....getting the dent out is optional.
