oil leak

Post by Benoit Muto »

My 1994 850 wagon (202k) has developed a substantial oil leak in the past few weeks. It seems to be coming from the top of the engine. Is there a valve cover gasket here? What could I do to diagnose/fix?

Is the oil coming out around the oil filler cap?

Yes, it pools on the bolts of the valve cover (?), runs off the distributor cap end, maybe elsewhere. I have not removed the spark plug cover to examine yet.

You might have a clogged oil separator (PCV) system. If you take out the oil dipstick with the engine running, is there vapor coming out of the dipstick tube?

I'll have to check that. I did notice white "gunk" on the dipstick a few weeks ago when I did an oil change. My 1990 Grand Am had that H2o issue and would get the gunk.

Yes there is vapor (pouring) out of the dipstick tube with the engine running. Any suggestions?

You'll need to replace the breather box and entire PCV system which means taking the intake manifold off of your car. You'll need a new manifold gasket and some select tool and it will take you the better part of the day. Look in our repair database for PCV and you'll see a few write-ups with pictures. www.fcpgroton.com sells a kit that includes all you need except the gasket. Good luck...I did mine a few months ago- it wasn't difficult- just took time and the right tools.

Ok Thanks. I'll look at the info. It's ironic that FCP is in my hometown, office is 10 minutes away!
