OBD2; interface ELM 327 vs. "volvo" chipset 232

Post by mosearch »

I need to buy an OBD2 interface for my PC...and it seems from looking on Ebay, there are at least 2 choices:
the genaric interface called "ELM 327" for $45, and another termed "volvo chipset 232" for about $80...
Which would be better? Do I truly need the 232? And is 232 ONLY for volvo?
I'd prefer the option of also using it on my family's other cars (toyota, honda, bmw)...or are there significant advantages to the 232 for my volvo; meaning I will eventually need both? :?

year 2000 V70XC AWD, 94,000 miles, well maintained.

I have no idea... I know that some have used the VOL-FCR software with good success but this is limited to U.S. years '96-'98 and won't work on earlier or later Volvo's.
