towing 740 w/automatic trans

Post by ccb222 »

I just read chapwest post re: towing a car w/manual trans. I've been told I can tow my '87 740 wagon 4 down IF I disconnect the drive shaft at the rear differential. Since I'm relocating, this is a one-time thing and the trip is 1500 miles so dropping the drive shaft is not a hassle if it's an acceptable thing to do. If it's OK, do I also disable the steering OR let it find its own way? Thanks, CCB222

You have to put the key in the ignition and unlock the column and leave it that way while you are towing. The tires will then track around turns by themselves. DO NOT back up with the car connected to your tow vehicle or you may do significant suspension damage!

Thanks, vegasjetskier, for the steering info. Since you didn't mention it, I assume dropping the drive-shaft is the right thing to do. Thanks again. ccb222

I can't advise on that. I'd check with Volvo to make sure it's OK.

The advice from Volvo on towing auto 740s is:
They must not be towed more than 20 miles (30km) nor faster than 12mph (20km/h). If these conditions cannot be met, or if transmission damage has already occurred, the propellor shaft must be removed or the vehicle towed with its rear wheels off the ground.

You must remove the shaft completely, not just at the diff.

Thanks, Bill, I'll remove the shaft and head up the road. However, I'd like to repair the problem with the car first, and if you have any ideas re: my post (ccb222) of June 15, I'm all ears. Thanks again, ccb222
