Volvo Repair Database Electric Window Problems 2000 C70

Post by AlisN1dlan »

2000 C70 (have no idea what a "trim level" is) 58K miles.

Very shortly after the warranty expired my driver's side window refused to come up in the middle of an icestorm. I'm an hour away from the nearest Volvo dealership and my son had his street rod in my garage so I took it to a local repair place that advertised they "worked on all models".

After a VERY short look-see, they came out and told me I needed a "window regulator" and that since it was a part only available from Volvo, the price for the part alone would be $880. The total bill came to over $1,000 but I really had little choice.

After they "fixed" the window, it began leaking terribly. They tried twice to fix it but couldn't - and since the car was hesitating like crazy by now - kind of like it had water in the gas tank or was running out of gas - I took it down to Volvo. This was, I think, in February or March of this year.

Volvo did some kind of work on the throttle, which was covered on a recall and they said they fixed the leak. That night it rained like crazy and I had -no exaggeration - two inches of water on the drivers side floor. The wells in the drivers door were all overflowing and the master window button panel was just soaked. I brought it back and Volvo FINALLY fixed the leak once and for all . . . but now I have two windows that have failed: front and rear on the passenger side. AND the car just started hesitating like it used to - only worse: it really is almost undrivable.

Questions:
I found the articles on this site about repairing / replacing the window SWITCHES. There are references to some way to work the window manually with a screw driver and how to tell if the problem IS the switch or if you need a new motor: but I can't find those directions - just references to them.

Is it possible I have had THREE motor failures? or more likely that the water damage has ruined the switches?

The Nov. 2006 recall: what is that for? (The links no longer work) Is it possible that recall might fix the hesitation I described?

Sorry for being so long-winded and I appreciate all advice.
Carol
P.S. I really do need some guidance here: I'm considering trading the car because of all these problems and I really don't want to do that.

From an electrical point of view it sounds to me that the switches have taken in water and therefore damaged them. This obviously causing the windows to fail.

The last resort is that for some reason your door window seals are damaged and the motors in the doors have taken on too much water , again causing damage.. However i wouldnt of thought that this would be the case. It is more likely to be the switches.

Maybe remove the switch panel from the car and attempt to split the unit to dry them out and give the inside a good clean with some electrical contact cleaner.

I also have a 2000 C70, love my car, but now the drivers side window does not roll up ! It will roll down, but not up, I do not want to pay what the dealers are charging! Does anyone know if I can find this part ( was told it was the relay switch) ?? And If so where and approx how much, I heard it was easy to install, just snapping in? Is that true? Any help would be appreciated also how important are the Oxygen sensors?? Thanks !!!!

You probably have a bad switch in the driver's door. It's a common problem for the contacts to wear out. Unfortunately that master switch is rather pricey. There was a thread in here somewhere about someone taking theirs apart and fixing it.

Yes, the oxygen sensors are very important, but have nothing to do with the window. Are you having a problem with them?

Thanks for the quick reply, I really need to get that fixed. As for the oxygen sensors, the place I have been taking my car too for the past 3 months says I need them, BUT since I have been going to that place I have had to replace my radiator, ABS, and just yesterday the heater core and AC hoses, etc.. I am getting frustrated, just dont want to be taken advantage of. They want over 300.00 for the window repair. The other stuff I HAD to get done. I had coolant all over the carpets, and now I have to go get shampooed. :x

Thanks for your help..Can you tell me the exact name of the part I need for the window? I would appreciate, so I can call around and price.

The shop might be correct in their diagnosis and have identified the part you need. If you want to try changing the door switch, here's a how-to:

I believe the part number for the door switch is 8628966 and you can try pricing it at www.myswedishparts.com, www.tascafordparts.com, your local dealer or Darrell Waltrip Volvo @ 1-800-689-0021 and ask for Jamie or Don. I'd confirm the part # is correct before ordering.

Thank you guy's for posting this very helpful PDF, after downloading it
I did went to work on my 2000 V-70 SE as the window rolled down, but not up.
Instead of going to the dealer and pay the jackpot for a new switch, i did
disect the whole switch and there i did find the culprit!
The contact was totally gummed up from dust and other stuff, here
i did clean the contact with some electrical parts cleaner i had around
and saved myself a bunch of dollars!
Remember, all these parst you can take apart, however, they are pretty
fragile and the Chrome clips can jump away, other than that it is an easy operation what can save you a boatload without getting ripped off by an dealership!

Thanks again for saving me a bunch!
Sorry for not introducing myself properly, i am to thrilled about this so i started posting right away!

Here is a picture of the culprit, as you can see, there is quite a bit of build-up under the "up" contact (Fourth from the top)
Quick fix for about 15 minutes tops, no wonder these dealerships make a fortune on switches this way!
Good luck People!
