Overdrive? Topic is solved

i just accquired a 88 740 GL for free and it seems to be in good working order EXEPT for the fact that i think the overdrive (if there is one) dosnt work. the car is a non turbo 4cyl with an auto and driving it from its home i was turing almost 4k RPMs going 68 MPH. i noticed there was a button on the side of teh shifter which lit up an arrow on my dash but did nothing. are these things geared that steep? is my overdrive broken? or am i a moron? thanks

Hmmmm I Just bought a 91' 740 and have the same question: is there no fourth step?? overdrive?

Start checking the kick down wire that it is correctly adjusted. The little ring around the wire should be 0.25 - 1.0 mm from the adjusting nipple of the wire, when the car is idling.

Yes! I just solved the problem!!! it was the overdrive relay. - A very easy fix to replace it!!
