Sounds like marbles rolling around in the oil pan

While doing some routine maintenance on my 1997 850 GLT (about 200K miles), I noticed that it sounded like there were marbles or rocks rolling around in or near the oil pan. Could that be a sign of eminent oil pump failure? Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot the oil pump?

You are not being ignored but I have never heard of such a condition. Are you sure that you are not hearing a bearing on the AC compressor or something like that.

This is an interesting sound if wasn't just a one time sound.

How does the car run? Have you had major problems before? I would think it's something rolling around in the oil pan, but normally you'll only get little metal shards that you wouldn't hear.

It could be that your main or rod bearings are worn out. Does your oil pressure light come on? Has the engine been run before with no oil pressure?

You are so right, my wife's Jeep Cherokee detonated a cat and it sounded like a gravel pit on wheels. It will rattle without the engine running if you just tap on it.
