There's no upper ball joint on 850 front end. IS IT?

Post by genie »

Hi,

Just got the word from my dealer that my brick's front right upper ball joint has gone bad and had to be replaced. Part and labor costs $310. As far as I know there's NO upper balljoint-control arm in 850s. Am I correct? and if I'm what part might that be, (part no etc.)? The symptoms:

Jingling sound from the right front starting from 40 mph. No effect to handling and no difference on bumps. Thanks in advance.

You are correct there is no upper ball joint on McPherson strut suspension. There is a lower ball joint and an upper strut bushing. The upper strut bushing does wear out (I just replaced them on my 1987 760TI) you can see them when you open the hood. They have a large center bolt from the front shock insert and two or three smaller bolts that fasten to the body. The bushing (bearing) pivots when the wheels are turned.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

I suspected that they were talking about that too. I'll go there and pick up my brick in an hour, Then I will be sure that whether they are talking about that bushing or not. Anyway, do you think that, a worn upper strut mount would be the cause of the jingling sound I'm hearing, or might it be related to enything else. Thanks a lot.

It's more of a light knocking like knocking on a door. I have it and need to replace the shock mounts. I need to decide whether to do the shocks too while I'm in there. :?
