engine over filled with oil by garage

my 02 xc70d5 went in for a service recently.I have done about 3000 miles since the service and the car is putting out a lot of black/grey smoke.I have since discovered the engine has been overfilled with oil(about 2 litres)Would this cause the smoke and has the engine been damaged?
