Chuck,

The A/B OBD-I boxes with the "fly wire" only made through model year '95. I could post a picture but it wouldn't be in either of your cars. Although most of them don't know how to do it anyone with a Volvo Scan Tool can read your true mileage assuming that the instrument cluster is original to the car.

Did this on my 94 850 wagon and it worked perfectly. thanks for posting. you knew more than my dealer did. he said there was no way to get the mileage off the car once the odometer stopped working. :)

My mechanic tried this for me and it worked great. He couldn't get it to work right away, but I think he cleared the codes (even though I had no check engine light) then tried it again and it worked. 141,000 miles on the 15 year old 1994 850 turbo...not bad!!

Thanks for the great tip!

Worked for me after a couple of tries... '94 850 NA. The successful try was putting the wire in A7 before turning the car on to position II. When the ignition was on before inserting the wire it wouldn't cooperate. Found a discrepancy of 25,727 miles (the previous owner estimated 20k). Good to know he wasn't lying (I'll give him the benefit of the doubt)! So that puts me at 274,600 miles on the original engine with ~160psi across all 5. Volvo Happiness is mine.

If your odometer logs in kilometers then the codes will report the result in kilometers.

Hi, I'm doimg the odometer fix & was wondering how i can read the actual milage. what is "the fly wire to socket A7" refer to? do I need a service reset tool or is there a proceedure to do this without one? Any help would be great!

Thanks,

You have two boxes marked A and B behind the passenger's side headlight, more or less just behind the window washer fluid filler. The fly wire comes out of the A-side of the box.

Here is a description of the diagnostic ports:

http://volvospeed.com/CheckEngine.php

That writeup is specific to engine codes (A-2) but it all works the same if you plug the fly wire into port A-7 instead of A-2.

I just tried this. I bought my car at 240,039 miles I believe. The service sticker said the same so I figured out quickly that my odometer is broken. This worked great! It read 256,448... I'm glad that it's not on it's last leg mileage wise, these things run forever usually. Thank you for posting such useful info. I had just figured out how to test my codes the other day, no one around here does a reader for this car or even a regular OBDI anymore really....

Lee,
I have a '96 with a broken odometer and I think I'm going to stop by my dealership (Stillman Volvo...West Chester, PA) and see if they know how. However, I was wondering if you had a basic idea how to do it in case they didn't. I would feel pretty cool telling the Volvo specialist how to use his scanner!

Thanks,
Ryan B.
