I just dropped >$800 on repairs and rental cars due to a faulty ignition switch in our 1998 V70 (80K miles; just out of warrantee). The shop (not a dealer, but they specialize in Volvos) told me that they have been seeing 3-5 per week of these. Indeed, it took over a week (thus the rental cars) to get the part in; this would seem to indicate a high (and unexpected) failure rate. Is this a really common problem? If so, is there a recall in the works? I have started a letter to Volvo, but I wanted some more ammunition before firing it off.
Thanks,
John

We had to replace the ignition switch (mechanical part) on our S70.
Do a search on volvospeed.com and you will find it is a very common problem.
