'97 850 stalling

Hi,my wifes 1997 850 glt wagon stalls right after she starts it.It appears to be running very rich as this happens.The car will start, but when you try to give it any gas it just stalls.I did notice that it has had a very ,veryslight rough idle recently as well.Could it be the oxygen sensor, or the fuel pump relay?.This is our 7th or 8th Volvo,but our first front driver.Thanks for the help.

do you have ay codes ?
any work done to the car recently ?

if you feel its the fuel pump/fuel pump relay you could verfiy fuel pressure at end of rail presure should be at over 40 psi and constant...if pressure is below or fluctuates it can be the cause...do you hear a buzz fron the passenger side from the trunk when key at on without starting car ? (fuel pump starting up )

Sounds like your Air Mass Meter sensor is bad. The MAF(AMM) is located on top of the air filter box. If you disconnect it, and the car starts fine, got find yourself a new one. You can get the part here.

Thanks, that would apear to be it.I just removed the air mass sensor and voila! she fired right up!.Will probably order replacement online as locally they want around $250 -325(cdn) plus.Would a used one be wise?Thanks again.

+1 for cleaning maf before changing

you can use maf sensor cleaner or electric contact cleaner (not brake cleaner )
just spray and let air dry never touch the components also clean the connectors contacts...

otherwise if that does not work you can order an used one (order same part number as the one on your maf) or get a new bosch unit either from fcp or an online store..they are much cheaper than the price you were thinking, i would highly recommend bosch (oem)and would not go aftermarket on this part

being in canada make shure that when you order the custom fees are inculded sometimes the price might be cheaper in an othe online store but you might have to pay customs which will increase significatly the price
usually fcp inculdes the customs in their price never had a problem with them

one last thing i would also recommend also that battery terminals be cleaned and well tightened as preventive maintenance....
