My first ever car tool kit, way back in 1961, consisted of a roll of insulating tape - no duct tape then - the biggest screwdriver I had ever seen, a hammer and an adjustable wrench. It was a present from an uncle when I bought my first car and "would repair anything" (his words, not mine).
just an fyi. recently my 1990 740 turbo began stalling randomly. no consistency. could be at a stop or driving down the freeway and the engine would just shut off. i noticed the tach would instantly drop to zero. if i didnt turn the key completely off and back on it would not restart. the car started doing it every few minutes so i havent used it in a week.checked everything. fuel pressure, rpm sensor, ignition system etc. no faults found and no codes set. yesterday i noticed if i wiggled the key in the ignition switch just a bit it would do the same thing. replaced the ignition switch [ just the electrical part] accessed by removing the gauge cluster [easy], the car hasnt even sputtered once since in almost a hundred miles. VIOLA !
well i shouldnt have opened my mouth. the car is back to doing the same thing. replaced the rpm sensor. no change. fuel pressure remains constant at 43 psi. never starts to drop before stalling. ive heard this car has a hall effect switch in the distributor but not so. took it out tonight and nothing but a rotor. never loses power to the positive side of the coil or negative side for that matter. any suggestions ? thanks for any help.
