95 850T what is the best fuel pump??

Post by kenhallberg »

I have determined that the fuel pump is dead. I tried to jump the relay and no joy. Tank has 8 gal and no fuel on the rail and no sound of any kind at the pump which I exposed to be sure.

Dont want to spend a great deal of money on a new one. Your help is appreciated.

you can try a hit the tank and a temporary measure to see if the pump will start but that temporary...by any chance do you hear the pump for a few seconds when ignition key is a ii position ? or do you get constant fuel pressure at end of fuel rail `?...
if not then pump is probably gone...double check before..

i heard a lot of good on the walbro pump and they are cheap, there is also the hella fuel pump which is not that expensive and has a good reputation both of them are the pump only and you will have to remove the old pump from the casing to refit the new pump..

If you want save money Walbro pump is the one to get (I got from http://www.europartsdirect.com/ $57 shipped). It is a lot louder than the stock pump (Bosch), which you can get from DW Volvo for about $100 (pump only no housing).

BTW, watch out for the counterfeit warbro pumps flowing around Ebay.

I had a shop across the street do mine, and I'd bet they used a cheaper unit.

My only complaint is that previously, the Fuel Warning light came on with a good three gallons left. One could drive fifty miles or more, into the "-0- miles to empty" range, and when filling up, the tank evidently still had a gallon in it.

Now, the dummy light comes on, and one has fifteen miles to fill up before the engine starts choking. And when you fill up, there was still three gallons in the tank.

The fuel gauge issue is curious, the fuel level sender is a totally different item from the fuel pump assembly. I wonder if they pulled off the wrong cap and messed it up?

I see fuel pumps priced from $80 to over $200.
Is the difference robustness or is there another factor? Consistent pressure?

Does the fuel pump sit on an intake pad, upon the tank floor?
[Is this the correct part photo?]

The fuel sender may not have been touched. The fuel gauge is not convincingly in the red when the stuttering began [twice I've been caught!]

It could be your pump is not properly fitted in its housing (1/4" too high?). When I install my Walbro, I noticed it took extra effort to push the pump all the way to the bottom with a longer hose.
