1994 volvo 850T Fuel Pump question

1994 volvo 850T Fuel Pump question
This car has the original fuel pump that's 21 years old and a 198k miles on it (just background). My question is should I be able to see fuel flow from the shraeder valve with key in position two. I am having trouble starting the car and wanted to easily check the fuel flow. I can hear the pump spin up and stop and get a burst from the valve but no flow, is this normal. thanks

That is somewhat normal with the key in position II and the car not running. The fuel pump relay energizes the fuel pump for a couple of seconds when the key goes to position II and then turns it on full time once the car is started. If you want to check the pump for flow at the Schrader valve you really need to bypass the fuel pump relay. A wire between the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87 on the fuel pump relay will bypass it and turn the pump on full time with the key in position II.
The fuel pump relay is relay 103 and it is located under the fuse box cover.

Thank you Lee Will try the bypass and see what happens. Would you think it's about time to change the pump as P/M ??

If this is your daily driver and you don't have a second car around that you could seamlessly hop into and carry on with everyday life it wouldn't be a bad idea. My '94 went over 275k on the original pump but it died last year and it seems that they rarely die in the driveway when weather conditions are perfect to repair it.cBobs94850T wrote:Thank you Lee Will try the bypass and see what happens. In most cases they don't quit while you are on the road but they get to a point where the pump motor will no longer turn on when you try to start it. When that happens you may be in a good place or you may be in a bad place but in either case it is never convenient.

Bosch is the best, Walbro works fine but they are noisy. The other thing with Walbro pumps is that there are a bunch of counterfeits floating around. That may not be a big problem anymore but it was a terrible problem a couple of years ago.
If you are in a time crunch the pump that Advance Auto Parts sells as an Airtex brand kit is a Walbro in a different box but you can order a Walbro online for less money.

Bosch 69693 is the way to go.
Search for the posts by {b]stephansvolvo[/b], where he mentioned you need to remove the black casing on the new Bosch 69693, once you do that it is a perfect fit.
I also wrote some DIYs related to the fuel pump seal, EVAP hoses etc. You may want to look into that as well.

In this area we have Pep Boys, O'Reilly, Napa, Auto Zone. I just read another forum whose members warned everyone to avoid Airtex. Typically I have to buy online. Rockauto doesn't list Bosch but Amazon does.
I'm not in a time crunch and I need to be positive that it's the pump.
My 1993 850 non-turbo suddenly won't start.
it cranks.
Checked a plug for spark.
Looked thru oil cap and saw camshaft rotating.
Fuel pump relay clicks.
Bypassed the fuel pump relay.
Depressed the Schrader valve during cranking and no gas flowed out.
When I turn the key part way I hear humming sound in the dash but nothing at the fuel pump itself (should it make noise?).
Any more tests?

That may be a true statement. In my case it was a Walbro and it worked just fine but with any brand that repackages other peoples pieces you really don't know what is in the box until you open it and see. The only bad thing about it was the price - I think I paid over $100 for it but I needed to get that car running again quick since I was out of spare cars at that moment.I just read another forum whose members warned everyone to avoid Airtex
If you have a few days to wait buy the Bosch and - shameless site plug - use the link at the top of the page to get to Amazon since that puts a couple of Sheqels in Matt's pocket to keep the site up and running.
