Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's stylish, distinctive P2 platform cars sold as model years 2001-2007 (North American market year designations).
I've got this annoying rattle in the rear end going over small bumps. Getting under the car and tapping the sway bar at each end reproduces the noise. I'm assuming its the links at each end, but its hard to see what the exact problem is regarding where metal touches metal, but the noise is there.
I also assume that replacing the links will solve the problem. Am I on track here?
If so, does anyone have any detailed instructions on replacing them? I would appreciate the assist.
I believe that ipdusa.com has some stiffer ones than OEM. If I recall the wheels have to be dangling to get those things off, otherwise there is torque on them. If I'm not mistaken, it takes an allen wrench in the middle and an open ended spanner on the flat part of the end links to turn them loose. I hope this helps enough.
Thanks for the reply. The allen wrench tip is helpful--I didn't notice that was needed by looking at them.
Also, FYI...when I jack the car up the torque is created by dangling the wheels. It looks like the links can only be removed with the wheels on the ground. That's when I can get some play out of them.
One more question...the ipdusa.com links are about $50 each and the OEMs are $15 a piece, so is there an advantage to the stiffer ones, or can the OEMs work fine? I'm trying to keep the cost down, so before I order them I just wanted to be sure.
OEM will work fine for awhile and then wear out- like yours are now. Seems that when we put the IPD sways in, we had to dangle the wheels, or at least lift the car some to get the endlinks out and back in...
