I'm really sorry to dig up and old topic. I think I might be having the same problem you guys had. My driver and passenger side doors are creaking but I'm not sure if it's the check strap or not. I'm having some difficulty understanding the pictures though as well as how to fix this problem. If somebody could try to explain it to me I would really appreciate it. Thanks...

When the door check goes bad the door won't hold out when you open it. Ultimately it puts enough stress on the mounting point on the A pillar that the welds break on the mount. If yours holds OK but still pops when you open and close the doors it can often be fixed by just torquing down the mounting bolt.

If your door check itself is bad don't buy the POS Scan Tech replacement from FCP, mine only lasted about 90 days before it broke again.

Can somebody take a look at this picture and tell me where I should be looking to find the problem? Also, does the fatigue only happen on the back doors or does it happen up front as well?

It is hard to tell from your picture since the boot is covering the mounting point. Peel the boot back and have a look at the mounting point and the B pillar then.

Really dumb question I think, but the only way I can see to take off the rubber boot is to cut it off... Is that really the only way?

Just peel the boot back, you don't need to cut it.

I read a lot on this because it happened to me a while back and I never came across any mention of it happening on any other door than the front door of the driver side, obviously the one door that get the most use and this happens from opening and closing the door thousands and thousands of times. You would have to ride with a car full of passengers virtually all the time to have other doors fail, seems unlikely that this is the problem.

I'm wondering if there is a connection between the door check and the bad welds. My welds are bad and I'm going to try the bolt solution soon but should I also replace the door check?

Thanks JD - '96 855GLT - '73 1800ES

JDW, do you think that the creaking in my backdoors is something other than the door check?

Haven't had time yet to check underneath the rubber boot with all my classes this semester. However I was thinking today and I just realized that my driver side door doesn't hesitate to swing WAY open, which leads me to believe that the door chekc may have completely failed in it? I don't know why it took me this long to connect the dots. Any ideas or thoughts?
