Volvo Repair Database Volvo S60 AWD 2002 Driver's side power window switch

Post by rmalviya »

The driver's side power window switch for the driver's side window works about 80% of the time. I know that the window motor isn't shot because the window rolls down like normally when it works. Relay works as well. I searched on this forum and noticed the thread for the V70 power window switch fix. I ended up taking out the window switch cover and gaining access to the power window switch (following the instructions on this forum). I removed the switch from the housing and opened it. I used electric contact cleaner I purchased from Radio shack and cleaned all contacts. I reinserted the window switch back into the housing and put the cover back. Window worked great. :D No problems for a few weeks. But, just recently, the same issue came back. Window goes down about 80% of the time. Sometimes it gets stuck halfway down. Sometimes halfway up. Sometimes, it won't go up or down at all.

1. Any diagnosis you can think of?
2. Do I need a new switch from Volvo? ($300+ for this model)
3. If so, I understand I need to have the dealer install it because it will need to reprogram it to my car. (This is where Volvo has everyone)
4. Any other cheaper alternatives?

I appreciate any help on this one.

Well, you may need a new switch, or you may only need to have the window recalibrated. Either way it has to be taken to a shop with VIDA, which can be either an idependent or a dealer. The VIDA system is not exclusive to dealers, Indy shops can use the same system dealers do. It just costs so much money for the subscription, that you have to be a large shop to recover the money you spend on the system.

We do sell a fair amount of DDM's or drivers door modules for this car, and it does require software when installed because it is a module. Anytime you hear something referred to as a module, its going to require software when installed. Part number is 30658116, which is for the DDM, we have them in stock. Just put in the part number in the "search" function, and compare prices. Mention MVS and receive free shipping!

I had the same problem on my 2002 xc70.

It uses the same Drivers Door Module (DDM) part number 30658116.

I did three things

A) Disassembled the DDM and Cleaned the buttons and the upper circuit board assembly. This module does not have contacts to clean. instead it has force sensors integrated into the circuit board that can be affected by an accumulation of dust and dirt. The rubber mat on top of the upper circuit board and under the buttons needs to be removed and cleaned.
B) Removed the wiring plugs from the connectors on the DDM and the window drive motor and cleaned them using contact cleaner.
C) Lubricated the window drive gear with general purpose grease.

The job took about 2 hours including removing and reinstalling the door lining.

I can provide a more detailed description of the DDM disassembly & cleaning and some picture if you need them.

Hi
Ive also been troubleshooting a DDM that has suddenly & completely stopped working and your info has been very helpful. Hopefully I'll find that the problem is a fuse or loose connection rather than needing a new DDM.
I have one (hopefully simple) question: can the DDM just be just be pryed out with a screwdriver or must I remove the door panel to release the DDM from behind?
Best regards
Steve

It is necessary to remove the door lining to remove the DDM since there is a screw inside the door lining that holds the module to the lining.

The module or the lining will be damaged if you just try to pry ther module out.

Removing the door lining is a very simple job.

There are 8 button rivets which can be removed by pushing the center of the rivet in about 1/8 of an inch, you will feel a click and the rivet can then be pulled out.

Removing the door handle cover is simple and you will need to find the slot for a screw driver in the cover by shining a flashlight upward on the bottom of the handle cover. once located insert a flat screw driver about 1/4 inch and gently twist the screw driver to loosen the cover, gently pull on the cover to remove it.

There are two Torx screws holding the handle to the door, remove these and the lining will be loose.

Pull the bottom of the lining inward and upward and the lining will come off to about 3 inches clear of the door.

You will need to release the cable for the door handle by opening the plastic clips that hold the cable. Remove the two connectors on the DDM and on connector for the speaker on the lining.

Reinstallation is the reverse.

Back to your specific problem

Is the DDM totally dead meaning the buttons don't illuminate with the headlights on, all of the windows, the locks and the side mirrors don't work or do some of these things work?

Do the rear windows and passenger side window work if you use the buttons on the modules located on the specific doors?

Has the DDM module been replaced with a different one recently or is it the original?

regards

Thanks for the info on removing the door lining...I will probably need to pull it apart.
The module was totally dead...no switch lights, power to windows, mirrors, or lock. The power seems fine to the other doors...the locks work with remote, windows work and switch lights are on.
I had checked the fuses a few days ago, which looked fine. After re-inserting the fuses, the module worked again. I was happy that things were working, but yesterday it stopped working again. I tried the fuses again but it didnt work this time.
The module is original as far as I know, but I bought the car used a few years ago.
I'm back to thinking I need a new module, but I plan to clean the contacts and top board before doing it. (it will be about a week before I can do this)
I'd appreciate any thoughts you have on this. Does the fact that nothing works mean that I more likely have a bottom board problem? I ask because I read in another post that if you dont switch out the bottom board in the module, it saves the trip to the dealer for programming.
Thanks

One more symptom...prior to failure, there is a rapid clicking sound coming from the DDM. I dont know if that shed any light on the diagnosis.
Thanks

I've had a similar problem with my 2002 V70 for a few years now. Something I noticed recently is that the window works fine (auto down/auto up) when the engine isn't running.

Have you noticed if your problem is outside temperature related? Mine only has had a problem in the past few weeks when the temp has been blow 20degF. Its over 30 today and the switch seems to work at this point. I bought a used DDM and plan to just install the top board and see if solves it. If not, I'll have to install the bottom which requires dealer programming.
