My 2001 S80 displayed the same engine service required code 44 and the Volvo dealer didn't know what it meant either!

My S80 read the same message yesterday, It scared me when it came on! It was running fine, the second time i turned the car on today and the light shut off and the message is gone. Im not sure what it means but hoping it is a fluke......the odd part is intermittantly for the last few days my check brake light has come on everytime I have someone look they are all working properly & the check brake light isnt on, im not sure if they are related but the only thing ive noticed.....

44 is not a trouble code. The message "Engine System Service Required" is not a maintenance reminder and the trip button is not the procedure to reset it. The only message that can be reset with the trip button is the service reminder ("Service" light on some models, "Time for Regular Maintenance " message on others).
Volvo does not give us info on what "44" means. sometimes its hidden holding other problems inside

Hope that helps... Sounds kinda sketchy...

Thanks. It does help a bit, im trying to find out what engine system service I need. My obd2 is not giving me anything perhaps it is the faulty ETM that was recently discovered.

have you tried disconnecting the battery for a bit?
Remember to keep track of your radio station programs and settings ig you do so... you'll have to reset them later.

Ive disconnect my battery and the message "Engine System service required" disappeared. However it reappeared on the first driving cycle. Im thinking it may be related to the ETM failure.
