DonnVa made a wonderful thread about that here :

You can source the seal on eBay. After much thought, I just ended up getting a rack from United Power Steering. I will say both racks have failed in both of my vehicles. It wasn’t worth the headache working in such a tight space for me to remove the pressure/return lines and transfer lines. Then you need to put new o rings there anyway. Then you might have the rack fail in a few thousand miles anyway. Not worth it to me. Replace the whole thing and never do the job again was my thinking.
Don’t forget to buy a new u-joint with the correct P/N for your VIN. you will destroy the old one removing it, and it’s likely the cause of the seal failure in the first place.
Save my sanity. Need part numbers of small orings on power steering knuckle. Topic is solved

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

Thanks for the advice on the Ujoint. It makes sense that if it gets sloppy,..it’ll wallow the seal over time.
Also, thanks for the tip about that rebuild shop. Gonna call em up on Monday. Do you happen to remember the ball park figure that it cost for their rebuild? And, did you send them yours to do, or get one off their shelf and send in your core.

I just checked out that link you sent. Hate to say it, but that’s right down my alley. Yes, I’m a glutton for punishment,….but I get the giggles when I see someone fix something for $13 and a little elbow grease.
I’m gonna see about getting a junkyard rack and giving it a go. That way, if I can get the pinion R&R’d like he did,…and down the road the actuator starts leaking out the bellows,…I’ll have a spare rack all rebuilt and ready to go. Yup,…time means less than money to me, and I find fixing stuff myself Uber satisfying. To that end,…I’m 58, and have had a car “in the shop” a grand total of two times. Once for automatic trans rebuild on an F250, and once for an electrical gremlin I couldn’t chase down. Everything else,…my fun.

So this is my first foray into the Volvo world.
I know there’s some cross over with parts on other models.
If i go cruising junk yards for a steering rack,…what other models and years would cross over to my 2007 V70 2.4L as far as steering racks go?

Welcome, Steve
The online Volvo parts webstore lets you punch in your VIN, then pick parts. On each part description is a fitment chart which tells you what other models it fits. I use that to guide me for compatibility.
Here’s link to the store, andacouple of screen grabs to give you the idea
