Retitled but will add cut indices later on.
Elapsed time, 3 hours at leisurely pace.
Chock jack and block car up to one main stand under rear axle carrier, two stands under rear torsion arms
I added two safety jackstands under pinch welds since Ill be rolling underneath
Took about an hour to remove exhaust (flange clamp at Bosal cat, band clamp at joint above axle) and then the VIscous coupling.
VC took 4 M10 , 14 mm hex bolts cracked unto differential - need long, like 30 inch extenders to come on top of VC toget top ones.
Six H6 internal hex screws secure VC flange to differential flange - match mark and crack with 12 inch handle, zipped off with flexy.
Use the big bolts in front to stop the VC from falling on your nose - about 10 kG
I put a jack centered on tank, made contact, then released the 4 bolts on the torsion arms on each side and let them fall after removing the two m8 13mm hex on the two and straps, forward.
Tank then descended to a serviceable position as I solely released jack. Rested tank on wood cribbing

Every fastener yielded to a shoulder pull on a 24 inch bar, then zipped off with the 100 ftlb impact.
The price of all those new fasteners and Zinc antiseize was not remembered. I probably saved myself 2 hours bad labour doing that.
Buying new differential bolts, certainly.

Wisechatmgr very nicely picked me up at Amtrak then played babysitter , call 911 then videotape the. Guy stuck under the car , while I did this. I do have the back end up really high, front clearance about 2 inches
Gas tank is 100% full. I’ve got an in-line pump coming to empty it Thursday or next week.

Reflections and lamentations on this job
I did the drop on a completely full, 16+ gallon tank, so an extra 100# of weight. Jack was fine of course, and the descent was easy to control.
I’m contemplating if I should rig up a powered transfer system between the saddle tanks. I know the ejector is not working as it stranded me once. However , maybe the new pump will get that working again. I think I’ll leave the VC off for now until I go back to AWD for winter, as that would make the tank drop really easy. In-line pump on the cross over between RHS and LHS easy. I could also cut it now and loop in a hose piece to allow insert without dropping if I can find a mount spot and run a wire. Hmmmmm.
I’ll check the resistance on the gauges to see how they are working. A working gas gauge isn’t a huge priority here, I’m happy to run the car on mileage and logbook
With the pump out, this isn’t an easy tank to drain. There is no way to get a siphon hose into the tank. The filler neck is really long on the XC, AWD, R saddle tank
I couldn’t get the filler gaiter back on right after the axle drop. I probably need to move the fill tube about 2 cm outboard to move it closer to the body. I’m hoping the tank drop will let me reach that buried clamp and fix that, too.

Well, rethinking this.
Pumped out 10pm gallons of gas yesterday but ran out of time to pull pump before travel
I have three things pushing me back to axle drop
1. my fill gaiter isn’t in the right place. Looking at the diagram the hose connecting it to the tank has to be correct in angle or else the gaiter won’t fit. I suspect mine needs rotating about 45 degrees. Clamps inaccessible without axle drop
B. The wiring harness for the pump is attached to top of tank, so if I don’t drop axle I have to cut and splice. That same time could be used for tank drop…..because
iii. With the exhaust, tank, driveshaft, and VC already out, im 90% done with axle drop already
HELP NEEDED
can some one find the pitch and size on the 949793 bolts for the back axle? I have they are 17mm head but need to order some long ones to use as an axle guide for a 30 cm drop

I know I have a bunch of them somewhere. I'll see if I can find them and measure. Fairly certain the larger ones are M12 x 1.25 but will confirm if I can find them later on.
