So, I'm finally getting back to working on my daughter's S40. I think I mentioned before that I found another S40 not too far away that someone was selling because it wasn't running. After discussing with the guy we came to the conclusion that it was most likely electrical and he even said the engine sounded good, just one day he couldn't get it started. Tried a new battery and the local shop told him he'd need to take it to an actual Volvo dealer. Since there wasn't one within 250 miles he decided to sell it rather than pay that towing expense. I grabbed a trailer and picked it up for $1000.
My plan was to swap the engines but didn't want to gamble swapping without hearing the new engine first. I've got some pretty big home projects going on too so it took a while to start working on it. Also had to rearrange the garage a bit since my "mistress" (as my wife calls it...a 1974 Landcruiser restoration project) is taking up a lot of my repair space.
After sequence of tests each evening after work I got the new Volvo running and it sounds really good. The main issue was the starter was dead. It also had a short in the ignition switch which gave me fits. Got it running in time for my daughter to have something to drive to school while I work on her car. It would be nice to just give her the new one but unfortunately it's not nearly as nice cosmetically.
Back to the engine...I dropped the pan and that #2 bearing was beyond shot. Only two thin pieces remained:
I didn't get a picture of the pan but it was in pretty decent condition. Will just need a good cleaning. The journals don't feel that bad but I'm planning to polish them up:
When I ordered the bearings, I didn't see the size options and of course I ended up ordering the smaller ones. I didn't realize it until I did a test fit last night with plastigage. I could tell there was a tiny bit of play in it before I pulled the cap to check the plastigage. The clearance is definitely off:
I'm going to go ahead and polish the journal and find a micrometer to double check the size before ordering the right bearings. Hopefully I can get that done and ordered within the next week. I did pull the cap off of one of the others just to see how it looked and it appeared to be fine. I'll probably go ahead and order new bolts for them all and pull each one to confirm there are no other problems or potential problems.
I'm still torn on whether I'm going to actually swap the engines or not. Trying to find the time that I can do it and she can be without a vehicle for several days is tough now that school is back in. If I do, it will probably need to wait until late October when my wife and daughter are going out of town for several days for a wedding.
Time will tell...I'll update when I get to the next milestone or if questions arise before I can get to the next milestone.
