Hey, take a pass on this one. You now have a complete answer for possible sites to go looking for the issue!

I work on the, if it comes from the steering only it is most likely front end issues. If it steering and you feel it through the driver's seat, then it is likely from the rear.

I now have a 'there is a strange noise from under the 'R' near the front seat area' to work one. Only took the R 500km of driving to develop a new issue! I had it up on the hoist and could not find anything obvious. 2 plastic heatshield nuts had worked their way through the material. Those have been reinforced by large washers but can't see how that was the issue. More investigating to do!

My 94 T5 has a similar issue, and I think it is the cat heatshield.

Our son drove the R and says he can't hear any noises so, until the 'boss' drives it again we don't know if that was the issue.
