Re: 04 XC70 front wheel scrubbing, tight turns
I believe your ‘04 has the steering stop tabs on the control arms, have you had a look at the condition of those? Another item of note, my car did exactly what you are describing several years ago, I put up a similar post to yours inquiring what it could be. This was resolved with new tires which made a huge difference in the scrubbing at near lock steering radius in parking lot situations, my tires looked similar to yours and were just over an inch short in height from Volvo spec ( no name 215/65/16’s ). New Toyo’s of the correct size resolved the scrubbing which was a bit of a surprise to me. At the time my car had all brand new suspension and steering components blue box Volvo. Have the alignment tech do a thorough inspection on the front end paying particular attention to the strut spring seats.

New windshield tomorrow, alignment next week.
Since I was going to get new summer tires in the spring, One could argue I should just order them now and get it over with....

If you have them, switch them to the other's side and flip them upside down to double their life magically... VOLVO doesn't want you knowing about this secret trick!!!BlackBart wrote: ↑11 Sep 2024, 14:06Good question - I will check on these.Blacklab467 wrote: ↑10 Sep 2024, 20:31 I believe your ‘04 has the steering stop tabs on the control arms, have you had a look at the condition of those?

I crawled under. I'm not seeing anything resembling a steering stop here. Didn't I have them on my 850 - like a white nylon stop bolted on the side?

No steering stops present from that pic. I only have them on my S60.

Well here's a stupid thing I did -
When I went out to check the tire ages, I looked at the age on the fronts, checked the backs, and noted Hankook - on the backs. The fronts are some no-name "Arizonian" things I've never heard of. The backs are in decent shape with some tread left. D'OH.

I too need a new set of tires soon. Front edges are thin and weather cracking is appearing. I plan to replace in a few weeks. I have been airing up a slow leaker forever.

I’d check for snow before your trip. Those tires perform ok in wet weather?BlackBart wrote: ↑10 Sep 2024, 13:45 OK.....let's talk about 10 yr old tires... 25th and 26th week of 2014. Hmm. Hankook all-seasons, 215/65-16 96T. These came on a spare set of alloy wheels I bought for snow tires. The seller was supposed to take them off but shipped them mounted. They weren't bad so I decided to use them up. I also had a set of Michelins with even less tread, and even older, so I tossed them. These looked fine when I put them on in the spring.
We have an 1800 mile trip to Colorado in October loosely planned. The rears have a lot more tread if I swap them.
A lot of tire age is how they are stored. I had a set of OEM Hankooks at 35k miles/5 years I had to switch on my Nissan truck as they were not safe in rain and weather checked like yours.
