I am going to have to replace the timing belt and serpentine belt anyway, so it would be easy enough to remove the power steering pump for better access. Thanks for the advice on the extended Torx (I have those thanks and use them regularly).

I believe I looked at the thread on swapping the thermostat. Can't recall who wrote it now. They used a particular aftermarket thermostat for doing the repair but that is now NLA. So unless there is another option out there? I can't recall the specifics, but one of the issues is a lack of replacement gasket for the job. The suggestion of the backwards use of of the earlier housing is a reasonable thought but as the writer mentioned, perhaps it was changed for a reason?

Having said that, last night I went through the service history on the car and can find no evidence that the thermostat and temp sensor have ever been replaced. Many other surprises including the history prior to us buying from the local dealer in 2011 at 52,000 miles. This shows a radiator replacement as about 22,000 miles, an angle gear at about 25,000 miles and a few other parts I would not have expected. For about the next 11 years it was serviced at the dealer and some work can still be occasionally done at the dealer if needed. It now has just over 127,000 miles on it and if I need help I have my former Volvo mechanic friend as paid help with the skills or knowledge I don't have.

As the thermostat and sensor have lasted so long, I am now thinking perhaps we should get the blue box part at ridiculous expense, especially if there is (unlikely) a chance of it lasting another 19 years!

Neil.

I would not PM a thermostat on a P2 at 150000 miles.

Tstat lifespan is about 100K-150K miles.
Sometimes it fails "closed", sometimes "open".
If you drive around town only, then watch it.
If you often do long distance drive, then PM is not a bad idea.
