To: bsgoldn : From: jjss70: Try removing the negative cable at your battery, give it a minute to reset and replace the negative cable back on your battery. Turn your ignition switch on to the first indent or mark on your steering column at ignition switch and make sure nothing else is draining your battery down other than the digital readout of the word "OFF" by your radio. Wait 2 hours and when you see your radio after 2 hours it will be asking you for the code again. You only get three attempts at providing the correct code. Good Luck, jjss70.

From the 1997 850 owners manual.

If an incorrect code has been entered "EEEE" is displayed. Enter the correct code.
After three unsuccessful coding attempts, the set will lock and remain locked for two hours. "OFF" is displayed.

During this waiting period:
1.The battery must be connected
2. The ignition key must be turned to position I (ACC (I) not ON (II))
3. The unit must be turned on
4. Make sure the headlights are turned off to help prevent battery drain
(please refer to page 2:8 for information on turning the headlights off)*.
5. Enter the code again once this time has elapsed. ( The display reverts to CODE )

* If your Daytime Running Lamps are active, what looks like a screw in the corner of your light switch is in fact the DRL switch. Turn it with a Jeweler's screwdriver.
(|) Automatic daytime running lights
(/) Automatic daytime running lights (will also function when the headlight switch is in position )
(\) All lights off (daytime running light function disabled)

This happened to me when I disconnected power and entered a wrong (guessed) code 3 times. It said "off" and I needed to leave the key in the 1 position for a bit over 2 hours. Frustrating.

The good news for me was it was easy to get the code. I went to this page:

http://volvo.custhelp.com/app/answers/d ... radio-code

And entered my VIN, and it gave me the code right away.

Hopefully there's a way to get the code without the VIN, but I didn't investigate that.
